Schengen Visa Rejection: Insurance Errors and Fixes

Schengen visa rejection insurance problems come down to dates, territory, amount or missing repatriation. See how to fix each one, reapply and get a refund.
A Schengen visa rejection for insurance reasons means the consulate was not shown "adequate and valid" travel medical insurance, which is one of the refusal grounds listed in Article 32 of the EU Visa Code. In almost every case the cause is one of five things on the certificate: dates that do not cover the whole stay, cover that is not valid in all Schengen states, an amount under EUR 30,000, no repatriation wording, or a name that does not match the passport. All five can be fixed, and you can apply again with a corrected certificate.
Key facts at a glance
- The legal test: under Article 15 of the Visa Code, insurance must be valid throughout the territory of the Member States, cover the entire intended stay or transit, and provide at least EUR 30,000.
- What it must pay for: repatriation for medical reasons, urgent medical attention, emergency hospital treatment or death during the stay.
- It is a named refusal ground: Article 32 lets a consulate refuse a visa when the applicant does not provide proof of adequate and valid travel medical insurance, and the standard refusal form has a line for it.
- You can appeal: the European Commission says refused applicants are told the reason and how to submit an appeal.
- Timing: applications can be lodged up to 6 months before travel and no later than 15 days before, and a decision normally takes 15 days but can take up to 45, according to the Commission.
- Scope: the Schengen area has 29 countries, including Bulgaria and Romania as full members since 1 January 2025.
Can a Schengen visa be rejected because of travel insurance?
Yes. Insurance is not a formality attached to the file. It is one of the conditions the consulate must verify, and the refusal form you receive has a tick box for it. If that box is marked, the officer either found no certificate, or found one that did not meet Article 15.
Be realistic about what insurance can and cannot do. A perfect certificate will not rescue an application with weak proof of funds or an unclear purpose of travel, and many refusals tick more than one reason. Read the whole form before deciding what to fix. If insurance is the only reason marked, you have the simplest refusal there is to correct.
Which insurance errors cause Schengen visa refusals?
These are the errors that fail the Article 15 test. Each one is visible on the certificate, which is the only insurance document most officers read.
- Dates that fall short. The policy must cover the entire period of your intended stay or transit. A policy that starts the day after you land or ends the day before your return flight does not. Departure day and return day both count.
- Wrong territory. Cover must be valid throughout the Schengen states, not only in the country you are visiting. A certificate that names one country, or that excludes any Schengen state, fails.
- An amount under EUR 30,000. If your certificate is in dollars, the figure must clearly exceed the euro minimum. A $30,000 maximum is not the same as EUR 30,000.
- No repatriation wording. The Visa Code lists repatriation for medical reasons and death alongside emergency treatment. A certificate that only says "medical expenses" invites a question.
- A deductible. A plan where you pay the first part of each claim does not show full cover from the first euro. WorldTrips tells visa applicants to choose a $0 deductible on Atlas plans, and Trawick says Safe Travels International meets the requirement with a $0 deductible.
- Name or passport mismatch. The insured name must match the passport exactly, including middle names and spelling. Each traveler needs to appear on a certificate.
- The wrong document. A payment receipt, a quote or a credit card benefits leaflet is not a certificate of insurance.
Our guide to the EUR 30,000 requirement explains the amount in detail, and the Schengen visa insurance requirements guide covers the full rule.
What certificate wording do consulates look for?
There is no single mandatory template, but an officer should be able to confirm every Article 15 element in under a minute. A strong certificate or visa letter states:
- Your full name as in the passport, and ideally your date of birth or passport number.
- The start and end dates of cover.
- That cover is valid in all Schengen states, or worldwide including them.
- The medical maximum, shown as at least EUR 30,000 or a clearly higher amount in another currency.
- That it includes emergency medical treatment, hospitalization and repatriation, including repatriation of remains.
- The insurer's name, policy number and a contact for claims.
Two less obvious points come from the Visa Code itself. First, Article 15 says applicants should in principle take out insurance in their country of residence, and may buy it elsewhere where that is not possible. Second, consulates are told to check whether claims against the insurer would be recoverable in a Member State. That is why some consulates publish lists of accepted insurers. If yours does, follow it.
Applying for a multiple entry visa changes one thing. The Visa Code asks you to prove insurance for the period of your first intended visit and to sign a declaration that you know you need cover for later trips.
Can the wrong plan for your country cause a problem?
It can, and this error is easy to miss because the certificate looks fine. Plans are filed for specific markets. If you buy one that is not sold to residents or citizens of your country, the insurer may decline a claim or cancel the policy.
According to the plan rules in Ombrela's quote system, WorldTrips' Atlas plans are not available to citizens of Cuba or Ukraine. IMG's Patriot international plans are not available to citizens of Botswana, Gambia, Ghana, Kosovo, Niger, Nigeria or Sierra Leone. Trawick's Safe Travels International is not sold to residents of the United States, most European countries, Nigeria, Ghana and others. Atlas plans also cannot be purchased by someone who is already physically in a Schengen country. Enter your true country of residence and citizenship when you quote, and buy before you leave.
How do you fix the insurance and reapply after a refusal?
Work through it in order.
- Read the refusal form. Note every reason marked, the date, and the appeal instructions and deadline for that country.
- Decide between appeal and a new application. An appeal argues that the decision was wrong on the file as submitted and follows the national procedure of the country that refused you. If the certificate really was deficient, a fresh application with a corrected certificate is usually the more direct route. This is general information, not legal advice.
- Correct the policy, not the PDF. Change dates, deductible or maximum through the insurer so a new certificate is issued. Never edit a certificate yourself.
- Recheck the rest of the file. The dates on the form, flights, hotel bookings and insurance should all agree.
- Reapply within the window. The Commission says you can apply up to 6 months before travel and should apply at least 15 days before. A new application means a new fee, which is EUR 90 for adults.
Before you resubmit, run the certificate through our free Schengen Certificate Preflight Checklist, available below. It turns the Article 15 test into a short list you can tick off line by line, including the refund terms to note before you buy.
How do insurance refunds work after a visa refusal?
Refund rules belong to each insurer, and the visa fee is a separate matter that consulates generally do not refund. Based on the cancellation terms in Ombrela's plan data:
- WorldTrips Atlas plans: cancellation is requested through the customer portal and a $25 fee may apply. WorldTrips says cancelling before the start date gives a full refund, and that only members with no claims qualify for a refund after the start date.
- IMG Patriot plans: a $50 fee may apply if you cancel after the effective date, and it can be waived if you cancel within the 3 day review period from the initial effective date.
- Trawick Safe Travels International: a full refund is available if the request arrives before the start date. After that only full month refunds apply, with a $50 fee and no refund if a claim is on file.
The practical lesson is the same for all three: if your visa is refused, cancel before the policy start date. Set the start date to your real travel date, not the application date, so the policy has not begun when the decision arrives. Our guide to refundable Schengen visa insurance goes through this step by step.
How to get covered
Go to the Schengen insurance quote page, enter your country of residence and the exact dates on your itinerary, and select a $0 deductible with a maximum well above EUR 30,000. Premiums depend on age, trip length, policy maximum and deductible. Download the certificate or visa letter, check it against the list above, and print it for your appointment. If you are replacing a certificate after a refusal, compare Schengen plans on Ombrela with your corrected dates first.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I get my Schengen visa fee back if I am rejected?
Generally no. The visa fee pays for processing the application, and consulates do not usually return it after a refusal. Service center fees are also typically kept. Your insurance premium is different: it is refunded under the insurer's own cancellation terms, which usually means a full or near full refund if you cancel before the policy start date.
Do I need new insurance to reapply after a Schengen visa rejection?
You need a certificate that matches the new application. If your travel dates changed, the policy dates must change too, either by amending the existing policy or by cancelling it and buying a new one. If insurance was the refusal reason, make sure the new certificate fixes that specific defect, such as dates, territory, amount, deductible or repatriation wording.
How soon can I reapply after a Schengen visa refusal?
The Visa Code does not set a general waiting period, so you can normally submit a new application once you have corrected the problem. Check the instructions of the country that refused you, because appointment availability and appeal deadlines vary. Remember the timing rule: apply no earlier than 6 months and no later than 15 days before your trip.
Does credit card travel insurance work for a Schengen visa?
Sometimes, but it is a common cause of problems. The consulate needs a certificate in your name showing dates, EUR 30,000 of medical cover, validity across the Schengen states and repatriation. Many card benefits only apply to trips paid with the card and come with a generic leaflet. If your card issuer cannot produce that letter, buy a standalone policy.
An insurance refusal is frustrating and also the easiest one to correct. Check the certificate line by line, cancel anything you no longer need before its start date, and get a compliant Schengen certificate on Ombrela for the dates you will actually travel.
