Common Schengen Insurance Mistakes That Get Visa Applications Rejected

May 8, 2025·5 min read·By Ombrela editorial

Schengen visas get rejected for insurance issues every day. Here are the most common mistakes — and how to avoid them.

Schengen visa applications are rejected for insurance reasons far more often than applicants expect. Most rejections come from preventable mistakes in the insurance certificate itself, not from inadequate underlying coverage.

Mistake 1: Certificate Doesn't State €30,000 Explicitly

The consulate officer reviewing your application must be able to verify the €30,000 minimum at a glance. Certificates that show coverage in USD without an explicit Euro conversion, or that hide the minimum in fine print, get rejected.

Mistake 2: Geographic Coverage Listed Incorrectly

"Worldwide coverage" is sometimes acceptable, but explicit listing of "Schengen Area" or all 27 member states is safer. Single-country coverage (e.g., "Coverage in France") gets rejected even if France is your destination.

Mistake 3: Dates Don't Match Visa Application

Your insurance dates must match or exceed your requested visa dates. If you apply for a visa from June 1 to June 14 but your insurance is June 2 to June 14, you'll be rejected. Always include a buffer day on each end.

Mistake 4: Certificate in Wrong Language

Most consulates accept English certificates, but some (notably Spanish, Italian, and German consulates) prefer their official language. When in doubt, request a multilingual certificate from your insurer.

Mistake 5: Certificate Issued After Visa Application Submission

The certificate must exist before you submit your visa application. Some consulates verify the certificate's issue date — if it postdates your submission, the application may be rejected.

Mistake 6: Plan Doesn't Include Repatriation

The Schengen requirement includes repatriation of remains. Some basic medical-only plans skip this benefit. Verify your certificate explicitly includes repatriation coverage.

Bottom Line

Schengen visa insurance is a documentation game more than a coverage game. Ombrela issues consulate-tested certificates that pass review on the first try.
