Leave home. Stay covered.

Medical coverage for trips outside the United States. If you get sick or injured abroad, a travel medical plan pays for emergency care, hospital stays and medical evacuation, which Medicare and most U.S. health plans do not cover overseas.

━━Emergency care and hospital stays abroad

━━Medical evacuation and repatriation

━━For U.S. residents and international travelers

What it covers, and what it does not

Covered

Emergency medical treatment, hospital stays, prescriptions for a new illness or injury, emergency dental, medical evacuation and repatriation, up to the policy maximum you choose.

Not covered

Trip cancellation, routine checkups, and treatment of pre-existing conditions, apart from a limited acute onset benefit on some plans. This is medical insurance for your trip, not a refund policy for your booking.

Where it works

Worldwide outside the United States, with a short list of excluded countries that varies by plan. For Schengen visa applications, choose a plan that issues a compliant certificate.

Questions

Travel medical insurance, answered

01

Do I need travel medical insurance for a trip abroad?

If your health plan does not pay for care outside your home country, yes. Medicare generally does not cover care outside the United States, and many private U.S. plans cover only emergencies abroad, often at out of network rates and without evacuation. A travel medical plan fills that gap for the length of your trip.

02

Is travel medical insurance the same as trip insurance?

No. Travel medical insurance pays for medical care and evacuation while you travel. Trip insurance mainly refunds prepaid travel costs if you cancel or are delayed. Ombrela compares travel medical plans. If you also want cancellation cover, you would buy that separately.

03

How much does travel medical insurance cost?

It depends mainly on your age, the length of the trip and the policy maximum and deductible you choose. The table on this page shows real premiums quoted for a 15 day trip at several ages. Get a quote with your own dates to see your exact price.

04

Does it cover pre-existing conditions?

Generally no. Travel medical plans exclude pre-existing conditions, although some include a limited benefit for the sudden, unexpected acute onset of one, with age limits. Read the plan wording before you buy if you manage a chronic condition.

05

Can I use it for a Schengen visa?

Yes, if the plan meets the Schengen rules: at least EUR 30,000 of medical coverage valid in all 29 Schengen countries for your whole stay, with a certificate you can submit. See our Schengen visa insurance page for plans that issue a compliant certificate.
