Schengen visa for Filipino in USA: apply at the consulate for your state with proof of US status and a EUR 30,000 insurance certificate valid across Schengen.
Yes, a Filipino living in the United States still needs a Schengen visa for a short trip to Europe, whether you hold a green card, an H-1B, an F-1 or another status. You apply to the consulate or visa center of your main destination that serves the state where you legally live, you show proof of your US status, and you submit a travel medical insurance certificate with at least EUR 30,000 of cover valid in all 29 Schengen countries. You can compare Schengen visa insurance plans from the US in a few minutes.
Key facts at a glance
- Philippine passport holders need a visa for stays of up to 90 days in the Schengen area, as shown in Switzerland's SEM overview of visa rules by nationality, version of 3 April 2026.
- Article 6 of the EU Visa Code says an application is decided by the consulate in whose jurisdiction the applicant legally resides.
- Article 12 requires a passport valid at least three months after you leave the Schengen area, issued within the previous 10 years, with two blank pages.
- Article 15 requires travel medical insurance of at least EUR 30,000, valid in all Schengen states for the whole stay, including medical repatriation.
- German Missions in the United States state that they can only accept applicants holding a valid US green card or US visa.
- Under Article 9, you can apply up to six months before your trip and, as a rule, no later than 15 calendar days before it.
This article is general information, not legal advice. Consulates set their own document lists, so confirm yours before your appointment.
Do Filipinos living in the USA need a Schengen visa?
Yes, unless you now travel on a US passport. Visa rules follow the passport you travel on, not where you live. A green card, an H-1B approval or an F-1 visa does not remove the Schengen visa requirement for a Philippine passport. If you have naturalized as a US citizen, you can enter the Schengen area on your US passport for up to 90 days in any 180 day period without a visa.
The Entry/Exit System started on 12 October 2025 in Schengen countries, according to German Missions in the United States. It records your photo and fingerprints at the border instead of stamping your passport. It does not replace the visa or its insurance rule.
Which consulate handles your application?
Two rules decide it. First, the main destination: you apply to the country where you will spend the most nights, or, if the stays are equal, the one that is the main purpose of the trip. If there is no main destination, you apply to the country of first entry. Second, jurisdiction: each country splits the US among its embassy and consulates, and you apply to the one covering the state where you legally live.
Germany, for example, runs an embassy in Washington and consulates general in Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, New York and San Francisco. Switzerland, according to SEM, takes most applications abroad through an external service provider. Other countries use their own consulates or outsourced centers. Article 6 lets a consulate accept someone legally present but not residing in its area only if you justify it, so apply where you live unless the consulate agrees otherwise.
What proof of US status should you bring?
Consulates want to know you can return to the US after your trip. Bring originals and copies of:
- Green card holders: your valid Permanent Resident Card. USCIS says a valid, unexpired green card is what you need to reenter after temporary travel abroad.
- H-1B, L-1 and other workers: your valid US visa, your current I-797 approval notice, a recent employment letter confirming approved leave, and recent pay stubs.
- F-1 students: your student visa and an I-20 with a DSO travel signature from the past year, which Study in the States lists as reentry documents, plus an enrollment letter.
- Everyone: a Philippine passport meeting Article 12, and ideally valid at least six months beyond your US reentry date.
If your US visa stamp has expired, speak with the consulate before booking. German Missions say plainly that they need a valid green card or US visa, and without one you may also need a new US visa to come home.
What are the Schengen visa insurance requirements for Filipinos?
They are the same for every nationality. Your policy must cover urgent medical care, emergency hospital treatment, medical repatriation and death, with a minimum of EUR 30,000, valid in all Schengen states for every day of the stay. For a multiple entry visa, you insure the first trip and sign a statement about later trips.
Many US health plans cannot easily issue a letter that confirms all of this, so many applicants buy a separate travel medical plan and print its visa letter. Choose a $0 deductible so the letter shows cover from the first euro, and check that your name matches your passport exactly, including any middle name. Our guide to Schengen visa insurance from the USA explains the letter in more detail.
Which plans can a Filipino in the US buy?
In the plan data Ombrela receives, Philippine citizenship does not appear on the exclusion lists of the Schengen plans, but your US state does matter. The Atlas plans from WorldTrips cannot be bought by residents of Maryland, New York or Washington through our quote engine, and the Patriot plans from IMG cannot be bought by New York residents. The Safe Travels International plans are not available to US residents at all.
That leaves an honest gap: if you live in New York, none of the Schengen plans in our quote engine is open to you, and you will need a travel medical policy sold in New York that issues a Schengen certificate. Residents of California, Texas, Illinois, New Jersey, Nevada, Hawaii and most other states can compare Atlas and Patriot plans.
If you are applying from the Philippines instead, Article 15 says you should in principle insure in your country of residence. The Atlas, Patriot and Safe Travels International plans do not list the Philippines as an excluded home country in our data, but check with the consulate or its visa center in Manila that an international policy is accepted.
What financial proof and bookings do you need?
Article 14 asks you to show the purpose of the trip, where you will stay, enough money for the stay and your return, and your intention to leave before the visa expires. In practice that means recent US bank statements, pay stubs or tax returns, a round trip flight reservation, and hotel bookings or an invitation.
Many Filipino families travel to see relatives in Europe. German Missions explain that if your relatives only host you, an informal invitation with their address and passport copy is enough, but if they pay for the trip, they must sign a formal declaration of commitment at their local foreigners office in Germany. Other countries have similar forms.
How do you get an appointment without stress?
Summer and December are busy, so book as soon as your dates are firm, up to six months ahead. The Visa Code sets a 15 day decision period that can stretch to 45 days, so leave margin. If you gave fingerprints for a Schengen visa less than 59 months ago, Article 13 lets them be copied to your new application, although you may still need to attend.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can a Filipino green card holder travel to Europe without a visa?
No. A US green card does not give visa free entry to the Schengen area. Visa rules depend on your passport, and Philippine passport holders need a Schengen visa for short stays. Apply at the consulate or visa center of your main destination that covers the state where you live, and bring your valid green card as proof that you can return to the US.
Can I apply for a Schengen visa in the Philippines while living in the US?
Generally no. Article 6 of the Visa Code gives competence to the consulate where you legally reside, so a US resident applies in the US. A consulate may accept someone legally present but not resident only with a justification. If you are visiting the Philippines for a long period, ask the consulate in Manila before booking an appointment there.
Does my US health insurance count for a Schengen visa?
Only if your insurer issues a letter confirming every Article 15 term: at least EUR 30,000, validity in all Schengen states for your dates, medical repatriation and death cover. Many US employer plans cannot confirm every term in writing. A dedicated travel medical plan with a $0 deductible is usually simpler and quicker.
I live in New York. Can I buy Schengen insurance on Ombrela?
Not at the moment. In the plan data Ombrela receives, the Atlas and Patriot Schengen plans cannot be bought by New York residents, and the Safe Travels International plans exclude all US residents. Look for a travel medical plan sold in New York that issues a Schengen certificate, and check it against the Article 15 requirements before you pay.
With the right consulate, valid US status and a compliant certificate, a Filipino in the US can apply with confidence. When your dates are set, compare Schengen visa insurance plans and add the letter to your file.
