Schengen visa insurance for Spain: EUR 30,000 of cover for repatriation, urgent care and hospital treatment, valid Schengen wide and shown to BLS.
Schengen visa insurance for Spain must cover repatriation for medical reasons or death, urgent healthcare and emergency hospital treatment, for your entire stay and throughout the Schengen area, with at least EUR 30,000 of cover. If you apply through BLS International, the insurance certificate is a mandatory document at the counter, so bring a printed certificate that states each of those points plainly.

What travel insurance does a Spain Schengen visa require?
Spain applies Article 15 of the EU Visa Code, and its consulates spell the rule out in plain terms. The Consulate General in New York says the insurance must cover the costs of repatriation for medical reasons or death, as well as urgent healthcare and emergency hospital treatment, for the entire stay and throughout the Schengen area, with coverage of at least EUR 30,000 or its equivalent in local currency.
Three words in that sentence cause most problems. Entire stay means every day from entry to exit. Throughout means all 29 Schengen countries, not Spain alone. Repatriation must appear on the certificate, not only in the policy booklet. If you are new to these rules, our overview of Schengen visa insurance requirements covers the basics.
How does BLS International processing work for Spain visas?
In the US, Spain's New York consulate says all visa applications for its district are submitted at BLS International in New York by appointment, and applicants use the center that matches their permanent address. Check accepted payment methods when you book.
BLS collects your file, fingerprints and fees, then passes the application to the consulate, which makes the decision. Because the insurance certificate is a required document, a missing or unclear certificate can stop your application at intake. Bring the printed certificate, a copy, and the full policy wording on your phone in case staff ask about a detail.
Which certificate fields should you verify before your BLS appointment?
- Name and date of birth matching your passport, character for character.
- Coverage amount of at least EUR 30,000, or a clearly larger amount in dollars or another currency.
- Territory that names the Schengen area or Europe.
- Benefits that list medical repatriation, repatriation of remains, urgent care and emergency hospital treatment.
- Dates that start on or before your arrival and end on or after your departure.
- Deductible of $0; WorldTrips tells buyers of its Atlas plans to pick $0 for Schengen visa use.
- Insurer details: policy number, company name and a 24 hour assistance number.
How should coverage dates match your Spain itinerary?
Match the certificate to the dates on your application form and flight reservation, then add a day on each side if your flights cross midnight or time zones. If you plan a side trip to Portugal or France, your policy already covers it, because the rule requires Schengen wide validity. If you might extend the trip, choose a plan that can be extended: according to the plan rules on Ombrela, IMG's Patriot international plans and WorldTrips' Atlas plans can be extended through the customer portal, usually for a small fee.
Which other documents does Spain require?
Spain's New York consulate lists these for a short stay Schengen visa:
- The completed Schengen visa application form and a recent color passport photo.
- A passport valid at least 3 months beyond your departure, with two blank pages, issued within the last 10 years.
- Travel medical insurance meeting the wording above, and the visa fee.
- A letter from your employer on letterhead with an original or electronic signature, stating your type of work, seniority and annual salary.
- Complete bank statements, all pages, for the last 3 months.
- A valid ID or driver's license (not an interim one) and a green card or residence visa valid in the US.

What are common rejection triggers for Spain visa insurance?
Missing or inadequate travel medical insurance is one of the standard refusal grounds on the Schengen refusal form. The problems we see most often are fixable before you apply:
- A deductible or coinsurance that leaves you paying part of a claim.
- End dates one day short of the return flight.
- A policy limited to Spain or to your home country.
- No mention of repatriation on the certificate.
- A purchase receipt or email instead of the certificate itself.
- A plan that is not sold to residents of your country, which can void cover.
That last point matters. According to the plan rules on Ombrela, IMG's Patriot international plans and Trawick's Safe Travels International are not sold to residents of Nigeria or Ghana, while WorldTrips' Atlas plans do not exclude them. Safe Travels International is also not sold to US residents. How to get covered
Go to the Schengen insurance quote page, enter your exact dates and country of residence, and filter for a $0 deductible. Premiums depend on age, trip length, policy maximum and deductible. WorldTrips' Atlas plans cannot be bought once you are physically in Spain, so buy before you travel.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does BLS accept a digital insurance certificate for a Spain visa?
The certificate is part of the file you hand in at the visa center, so bring a printed copy even if you also have a PDF. Paper avoids delays if staff need to scan or stamp it. Keep the full policy wording on your phone, since officers sometimes ask about the deductible, the territory or repatriation, and the certificate alone may not show every detail they want to see.
How much travel insurance do I need for a Spain visa?
At least EUR 30,000, or its equivalent in local currency, according to Spain's New York consulate. The policy must cover repatriation for medical reasons or death, urgent healthcare and emergency hospital treatment for your entire stay and throughout the Schengen area. A dollar policy maximum comfortably above that equivalent, such as $50,000 or more, avoids any exchange rate question at the counter.
Is Spain visa insurance refundable if my visa is refused?
It depends on the plan. According to the plan rules on Ombrela, Safe Travels International and Atlas International Premium give a full refund if cancelled before the start date, Atlas plans charge a $25 cancellation fee, and IMG's Patriot international plans charge $50 after the effective date unless you cancel within the 3 day review period. Keep your refusal letter in case the administrator requests it.
Can B1/B2 visa holders apply for a Spain visa in the USA?
Not at Spain's New York consulate. Its visa page says B1/B2 tourist visa holders must apply in their home country, because applicants need a green card or a residence visa valid in the US. Visitors in the US should plan to apply from their home country before traveling to Spain.
Print your certificate, check every field, and compare Spain visa insurance on Ombrela before your BLS appointment.
