Urgent Care That Takes Travel Insurance: Visitor Guide
Looking for urgent care that takes travel insurance? Start with your plan's US PPO network, ask about direct billing first, and keep an itemized bill.
Most US urgent care clinics will treat you if you have travel insurance, but not every clinic will bill a travel medical plan directly, so you may be asked to pay at the desk and claim reimbursement later. Your best chance of an urgent care that takes travel insurance is a clinic in your plan's US PPO network, such as the UnitedHealthcare network used by IMG's Patriot America plans and WorldTrips' Atlas America. Call ahead, show your ID card, and leave with an itemized bill.
Key facts at a glance
- WorldTrips' Atlas America charges a $15 copay per US urgent care visit, not subject to the deductible and waived with a $0 deductible.
- IMG's Patriot America Plus certificate lists a $25 urgent care copay and a $15 walk in clinic copay, both outside the deductible.
- Trawick's Safe Travels USA Comprehensive lists a $30 urgent care copay per incident, with no copay if you choose the $0 deductible.
- An emergency room visit for an illness that does not lead to admission adds a $200 copay on Atlas America and a $250 deductible on Patriot America Plus.
- MedlinePlus lists colds, flu, earaches, sore throats, sprains and minor cuts or burns as problems suited to urgent care.
- WorldTrips requires proof of claim within 60 days after coverage ends; IMG's Patriot America Plus allows 180 days from the date of service.
Does urgent care accept travel insurance?
Acceptance is the clinic's decision, visit by visit. A US urgent care center is typically set up to bill domestic insurers. A visitor plan administered by IMG, WorldTrips or Trawick is still an insurance plan, and your ID card lists the contact numbers a clinic can use to verify it, along with the network name on network plans. Some front desks will verify it on the spot; others will ask you to pay their self pay price and send the bill to the insurer yourself.
The network is what shifts the odds in your favor. IMG's Patriot America plans and WorldTrips' Atlas America use the UnitedHealthcare PPO network in the US, while IMG's Visitors Care uses the First Health network, according to Ombrela's plan catalog. A clinic that participates in that network already has a contract covering the price, which is why it is more likely to bill directly. Our guide to direct billing and PPO networks explains the mechanics.
Does travel insurance cover urgent care?
Comprehensive visitor plans cover medically necessary urgent care for a new illness or injury, usually with a small copay instead of the full deductible. Atlas America's copay is $15 per US visit, Patriot America Plus lists $25 for urgent care and $15 for a walk in clinic, and Safe Travels USA Comprehensive lists $30 per incident. After the copay, eligible charges are paid under the plan's coinsurance. On Patriot America Plus, that is 100 percent in network and 90 percent out of network in the US.
Limited, fixed benefit plans work differently. Trawick's Safe Travels Elite, for example, pays a set amount for each physician or urgent care visit, between $55 and $130 per visit depending on the option chosen, one visit per day and up to 30 visits per policy period. If the clinic charges more, you pay the difference. None of these plans cover care for a pre-existing condition, except within their acute onset rules.
Urgent care or the emergency room: how do you decide?
Medical need decides first. MedlinePlus advises calling 911 for choking, stopped breathing, a head injury with fainting or confusion, severe chest pain or pressure, or severe shortness of breath, and going to the emergency department for heavy bleeding, coughing or vomiting blood, or a severe allergic reaction. For colds, flu, earaches, sore throats, migraines, low fevers, sprains, back pain, minor cuts and burns, or minor broken bones, urgent care is designed for you.
Cost follows. When the problem is an illness and you are not admitted, several plans add a charge for using the emergency room: a $200 copay on Atlas America, a $250 deductible on Patriot America Plus, and a $200 additional deductible on Safe Travels USA Comprehensive. Injuries are treated differently on the IMG and WorldTrips plans, which waive that charge for emergency room treatment of an injury. If you are unsure, the nurse or assistance line on your ID card can help you choose.
How do you find an urgent care that takes your visitor insurance?
Start with the provider search your insurer offers for its US network, filtered to urgent care near where you are staying. Then call the clinic before you go and read out the network name and the provider phone number from your ID card. Ask whether they will verify the plan and bill it. A quick call answers the question for your specific plan before you travel across town. For a wider overview of your options, see how to see a doctor in the US as a tourist.
What should you say at the front desk?
Keep it short and give them what they need to verify you. Something like: "I am visiting the US and have travel medical insurance. Here is my ID card with the network and the number for providers. Can you verify it and bill the plan directly?" If the answer is no, ask: "What is your self pay price for a basic visit, and what could be added today, such as tests or imaging?"
Write down the answer and the name of the person you spoke with. If you pay yourself, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services says that providers usually must give a good faith estimate of expected charges to patients who are not using health insurance, when the patient asks or schedules at least three business days ahead. For a same day visit, simply asking for the price in advance is the practical version of that right.
What if the clinic asks you to pay up front?
Pay by card if you can, since the statement becomes an extra record, and ask for an itemized bill before you leave. IMG's certificate asks for statements that show the provider's full name, address and phone number, the date of service, a description with procedure codes, and diagnosis codes. Clinics often call this a superbill. A card receipt showing only a total does not give the insurer those details.
How do you file the claim afterward?
Complete the insurer's claim form, attach the itemized bill and your receipts, and submit it through the member portal or by mail. Deadlines vary: WorldTrips requires proof of claim within 60 days after the last day of your certificate period, while IMG's Patriot America Plus allows 180 days from the date a claim is incurred. Frequently Asked Questions
Do retail walk in clinics take travel insurance?
Retail walk in clinics make the same choice as any other provider: they may verify a travel medical plan through its network, or ask you to pay and claim reimbursement. Some plans recognize walk in clinics as a separate benefit; IMG's Patriot America Plus lists a $15 walk in clinic copay. Call the clinic first with your ID card in hand, and ask whether they will bill your plan's network directly.
How much is urgent care without insurance in the US?
There is no single national price. Self pay prices vary by clinic, city and what is done during the visit, and tests, imaging, stitches or medication are usually added to the base visit fee. Ask the clinic for its self pay price and likely extras before you are seen, and if you are paying yourself you can request a good faith estimate. Then submit the itemized bill to your visitor plan for reimbursement.
Is telehealth a good alternative to urgent care for visitors?
For simple problems it can be, but check your plan first. Coverage for virtual visits, and whether a US telehealth service can prescribe for you, depends on the plan wording and the state you are in. For anything needing an examination, tests or imaging, an in person urgent care visit is more useful. Keep any telehealth receipt and visit summary in case you need to claim.
Can urgent care refill my regular medication?
A US clinician may be willing to prescribe a short supply after examining you, but visitor plans exclude care related to pre-existing conditions, so the visit and the medication are usually yours to pay. The better approach is to pack enough of every regular medicine for the whole trip plus several days, in your hand luggage, as the CDC recommends for travelers with chronic conditions.
A little preparation turns an urgent care visit into a routine errand. Pick a plan with a US network, print your card, and compare visitor insurance plans on Ombrela before you travel.
