Travel insurance for USA from Bangladesh: how age sets the price, how acute onset treats diabetes and heart conditions, and which plans suit older parents.
Travel insurance for the USA from Bangladesh is not required for a B-2 visa, but it is the main thing standing between a visiting parent and a large US hospital bill. For visitors living with diabetes, high blood pressure or heart disease, the deciding feature is how a plan treats the acute onset of pre-existing conditions, and that benefit narrows with age just as the premium rises. Compare plans by age band and acute onset rules on Ombrela before the flight is booked.
Key facts at a glance
- The United States does not legally require B-2 visitors to carry health insurance, and it is not part of the visa application.
- Bangladesh was added to the State Department's B-1/B-2 visa bond list from 21 January 2026. A final rule published on 3 August 2026 allows bonds of up to $20,000.
- Visitor plans exclude pre-existing conditions. Some pay only for an acute onset, a sudden and unexpected flare that needs urgent care.
- In the plan data Ombrela compares, Safe Travels USA Comprehensive pays acute onset up to the policy maximum to age 69, up to $35,000 from 70 to 79, and up to $20,000 from 80.
- Trawick's benefit summary for the same plan lists a cardiac conditions limit of up to $25,000 through age 69 and $15,000 from age 70.
- None of the US visitor plans Ombrela compares list Bangladesh on their excluded residence or citizenship lists.
Is travel insurance required for a US visa from Bangladesh?
No. Consular officers at the US Embassy in Dhaka assess the purpose of travel, ties to Bangladesh and the means to pay for the trip. Health insurance is not a B-2 requirement. What has changed is the visa bond: since January 2026, some Bangladeshi applicants found otherwise eligible for a B-1/B-2 visa may be asked to post one. The officer sets the amount at the interview, and the bond has nothing to do with medical costs.
The State Department revises the bond country list on a rolling basis, so check travel.state.gov before the appointment. This article is general information, not legal advice.
What does acute onset cover for diabetes, blood pressure or heart conditions?
Standard visitor plans do not pay for a condition you already have. Acute onset cover is a narrow exception for a sudden, unexpected flare that needs treatment right away. It does not pay for checkups, refills, dialysis, planned procedures or care for a condition that was already getting worse before the trip.
Plans set their own conditions, and they are strict. IMG's sample Visitors Care certificate is a clear example. Treatment must start within 24 hours of the sudden flare, and the traveler must be under 70. The condition must have been stable for 30 days before coverage began, with no change in treatment. Travel against a doctor's advice or to seek treatment is excluded. Read your chosen plan's wording, and see our guide to pre-existing conditions and visitor insurance.
For heart patients, check the cardiac terms in particular. Trawick's benefit summary for Safe Travels USA Comprehensive lists cardiac conditions at up to $25,000 through age 69 and $15,000 from 70, well below the acute onset limits for other conditions. It also requires the acute onset to occur at least 48 hours after the effective date.
How do age bands change the price and the benefits?
Carriers price visitor plans in age bands, and older bands cost noticeably more for the same maximum and deductible. Age also changes what you get. In the plan data Ombrela receives, the Patriot plans stop acute onset cover at 70, and Atlas America covers it up to the policy maximum to age 79. Several IMG plans cap the whole policy at $10,000 for travelers over 80, and WorldTrips' Atlas wording sets a $10,000 maximum from age 80. Safe Travels plans accept travelers only up to age 89.
A practical method: quote the same plan at two policy maximums and two deductibles for each parent's exact age, then compare the cost gap with the extra protection. The premium calculator makes this quick, and our explainer on how much visitor insurance costs shows which levers move the price most.
Which plans are realistic for a parent over 70 from Bangladesh?
- Atlas America: comprehensive, ages up to 99, acute onset up to the policy maximum to age 79 according to the plan data, with low policy maximums from age 80.
- Safe Travels USA Comprehensive: comprehensive, ages 1 to 89, acute onset up to $35,000 from 70 to 79 and up to $20,000 from 80, with a lower cardiac limit of $15,000 from age 70.
- Patriot Plus and Patriot Platinum: strong network cover, but no acute onset cover from age 70, and Patriot Plus is limited to $10,000 over 80.
- Fixed benefit plans such as Visitors Care: the lowest priced route, but they pay set amounts per service and suit only families who accept large potential balances.
Should US based family buy the plan, and when?
Family in the US can buy the plan for parents in Bangladesh: enter the travelers' details, set Bangladesh as the home country and pay by card. Buy before departure and start the policy on the day they leave Dhaka. Many plans can be bought after arrival, but anything that began before the effective date is treated as pre-existing, which matters for older travelers.
If you live in New York, Maryland or Washington, some plans may not be offered for purchase; the quote form shows only what you can buy.
What should Bangladeshi visitors do before flying with a chronic condition?
See the treating doctor four to six weeks before travel. Confirm the condition is stable and that no medication change is planned, since a recent change can void acute onset cover. Ask for a short fitness to travel note. IMG's certificate, for example, excludes charges if a physician had advised the traveler in writing that they were not medically fit to travel when coverage was bought.
US Customs and Border Protection advises bringing no more than a 90 day supply of medication in original containers, with a prescription or doctor's letter in English. Insulin, test strips and needles belong in hand luggage with that letter.
How are claims paid if a visitor is hospitalized?
Call the assistance number on the ID card as soon as possible. Most plans require precertification for admissions and surgery, and missing it can cut the benefit sharply. On Visitors Care, for example, eligible expenses are reduced by 50% if required precertification is skipped. In network hospitals may bill the carrier directly. Otherwise you pay, keep itemized bills and claim back. Our insurance glossary explains terms such as URC, deductible and coinsurance.

How to get covered
Run a visitor insurance quote for each traveler with exact ages and dates, then filter by acute onset cover and policy maximum. Premiums depend on age, trip length, policy maximum and deductible, so compare live prices rather than estimates.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does visitor insurance cover a heart attack for someone with known heart disease?
It may, under acute onset cover, if the event is sudden and unexpected and every plan condition is met, including age limits and stability rules. Some plans set a lower limit for cardiac conditions; Trawick lists up to $25,000 through age 69 and $15,000 from 70 on Safe Travels USA Comprehensive. Treatment for worsening symptoms that began before the trip, or planned cardiac procedures, is not covered.
Can I buy visitor insurance after my parents arrive from Bangladesh?
Many plans allow purchase after arrival, according to the plan data Ombrela receives. The risk is that any illness or symptom that started before the new effective date is treated as pre-existing and excluded. Some plans also impose timing rules, such as VisitorSecure requiring travelers over 65 to start coverage within 30 days of arrival. Buying before departure avoids these gaps.
Is there visitor insurance for a Bangladeshi parent over 80?
Yes, although choices narrow. Atlas America accepts travelers up to 99 but with low maximums from 80, and Safe Travels USA Comprehensive accepts them to 89 with up to $20,000 of acute onset cover from age 80. Several IMG plans cap the whole policy at $10,000 over 80. Compare maximums carefully, because a low cap can be used up quickly in a US hospital.
Does the visa bond replace health insurance?
No. A visa bond is money posted with the US government to encourage compliance with visa terms, and it is cancelled when the traveler follows those terms. It pays nothing toward medical care. A visitor who is hospitalized without insurance is personally responsible for the bill, whether or not a bond was posted.
A careful plan now spares the family hard choices later. Compare visitor plans on Ombrela by age and acute onset cover, and choose one before your parents leave Dhaka.
