M1 visa health insurance: no federal rule requires it, and many flight and trade schools have no plan. See which plans accept M-1 visas and what to check.
There is no federal regulation that requires M-1 vocational students to carry health insurance, unlike J-1 exchange visitors. Your school may still require it, and many vocational, flight and trade schools do not offer a student health plan of their own, so you usually need to buy private coverage. Look for a student plan that explicitly accepts M-1 visa holders, and read its exclusions carefully if your training involves flying or other hazardous work.
Key facts at a glance
- No federal mandate: the insurance rule in 22 CFR 62.14 applies to J-1 exchange visitors, not to M-1 students; your school sets any requirement.
- Arrival: according to Study in the States, F and M students may arrive up to 30 days before the start date on their Form I-20.
- Practical training: under 8 CFR 214.2(m), M-1 students can receive one month of practical training after completing their program for every four months of full time study, up to six months, and USCIS must authorize it first.
- Plans that accept M-1: IMG's Student Health Advantage and WorldTrips StudentSecure both list M visa holders as eligible in the plan catalog Ombrela uses.
- Full time rule: StudentSecure waives its full time requirement for F-1 and J-1 students in the US, but its plan document says it stays in force for M-1 students.
Do M-1 students need health insurance?
Legally, only if your school requires it. The M-1 visa application and SEVIS process do not include a federal insurance test. That makes M-1 different from J-1, where the Department of State sets specific minimums for every exchange visitor.
Practically, yes. You will pay full US prices for any care, and vocational training often involves more physical risk than a classroom. A single emergency room visit or short admission can cost more than a year of premiums. Use our medical cost estimator to see what a few common scenarios cost near your school.
What M-1 visa requirements affect your coverage dates?
Your coverage should match your immigration timeline, not just your class schedule. Plan around three dates.
- Arrival: up to 30 days before your program start date, per Study in the States, so start coverage the day you fly.
- Program end: the end date on your I-20, which may move if your school extends your program.
- Practical training: you apply with Form I-765 before your program end date, cannot start until USCIS authorizes it, and training can last up to six months, so extend coverage to match.
If you are a national of a country under current US visa restrictions, check the State Department's current guidance before you pay for tuition or insurance.
Which student plans accept M-1 visa holders?
Among the plans Ombrela can quote for students in the US, two families are built for this.
- IMG Student Health Advantage: available to J-1, M-1, F-1 and A-1 visa holders aged 31 days to 64 years, with $300,000 per incident on Standard and $500,000 on Platinum according to the catalog. It can be bought after arrival, renewed for up to 60 continuous months, and a spouse and children can be added. You must not be hospitalized, disabled or pregnant on the initial effective date.
- WorldTrips StudentSecure: available to M, F and J visa holders under 65 in four levels, Smart, Budget, Select and Elite, with a $0 deductible on all plans according to WorldTrips' description of coverage. It does not cover dependents and cannot be bought from Maryland, New York or Washington.
The StudentSecure eligibility test needs attention. WorldTrips defines a full time student as someone at a college or university, and schools that do not use credit hours must document full time status. If your flight or trade school runs on clock hours, confirm with WorldTrips in writing that your enrollment qualifies before you buy. Does student health insurance cover flight training?
This is the most important question for M-1 flight students, and the honest answer is: not reliably. StudentSecure's plan document lists aviation, except as a passenger on a commercial aircraft, among excluded sports and activities, and its accidental death and dismemberment benefits exclude injury while operating an aircraft, learning to operate one, or serving as crew.
Before you enroll, email the plan administrator a plain question: is an injury during flight training as a student pilot covered under the medical benefit? Keep the written answer. Then ask your flight school what accident coverage it carries for students during training flights, and whether it names you as covered. Many vocational programs, such as welding, diesel mechanics or culinary schools, also involve tools and machinery, so check exclusions tied to your training activities as well.
How do you make a claim as an M-1 student?
Use the plan's network where you can: both StudentSecure and Student Health Advantage pay higher percentages inside the UnitedHealthcare PPO network, per the catalog. Show your insurance card at check in, keep itemized bills and any receipts, and submit claims promptly through the administrator's portal. If you receive a bill directly, do not ignore it; forward it to the administrator and ask the provider to hold the account while the claim is processed. How to get covered
Confirm your school's written requirement first, then compare M-1 eligible student plans on Ombrela. Eligibility depends on nationality: Student Health Advantage is not available to citizens of Botswana, Gambia, Ghana, Niger, Nigeria or Sierra Leone (Platinum also excludes Kosovo), and StudentSecure is not available to citizens of Cuba or Ukraine, according to the plan catalog. Premiums depend on age, plan level, policy maximum and length of coverage, so check a live quote.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is health insurance required for an M-1 visa?
No federal regulation requires it, and it is not part of the M-1 visa decision. Your school can require it as a condition of enrollment, and some do. Even where it is optional, you are responsible for the full cost of any US medical care, so private coverage from your arrival date to the end of practical training is the practical choice for most M-1 students.
Can M-1 flight students buy StudentSecure?
Possibly, but check two things. StudentSecure keeps its full time student requirement for M-1 students and defines full time status around colleges and universities, so a clock hour flight school must document full time enrollment. Its document also excludes aviation as an activity except as a commercial passenger. Get written confirmation from WorldTrips on both points before buying.
Can my spouse on an M-2 visa be covered?
StudentSecure does not cover dependents. IMG's Student Health Advantage lets a spouse and children apply together with the primary M-1 student, with a $100,000 per incident limit for dependents according to the plan catalog. The spouse cannot apply alone. Compare that limit with your family's needs, and see our guide to student family insurance for similar planning.
Does my coverage need to continue during practical training?
Your school's requirement may end with your program, but your need for coverage does not. M-1 practical training can last up to six months after your program ends. Student Health Advantage can be renewed monthly after an initial three month purchase, and StudentSecure can be extended in periods of 30 days or more, so extend before your policy expires.
