Barbados

Barbados does not require travel insurance for entry. You should still carry travel medical cover with evacuation, because the UK Foreign Office warns that treatment is expensive, that private clinics may ask for payment up front, and that serious cases may need emergency evacuation off the island. Medicare usually does not pay for care there.

  • 06Barbados was at Level 1, exercise normal precautions, in the US State Department advisory issued on April 10, 2026, as reported by Barbados Today.

Do you need travel insurance for Barbados?

Not to get in. Official entry guidance from the UK Foreign Office and the Government of Canada lists three things, and insurance is not one of them:

  • A passport valid for the length of your stay.
  • The online immigration and customs form, which the UK Foreign Office says all travelers must complete before arrival.
  • Proof of yellow fever vaccination if you are arriving from a country with yellow fever risk. The CDC says the vaccine is not needed for travel direct from the United States.

The case for cover is about cost and distance. The UK Foreign Office says medical treatment in Barbados is expensive and that serious cases may need emergency evacuation. Medicare.gov states that Medicare usually does not cover health care outside the US. The CDC's page for Barbados also suggests arranging medical evacuation insurance.

You can compare plans on Ombrela at travel medical insurance quotes. These plans cover medical treatment and evacuation, not trip cancellation.

How good is healthcare in Barbados for visitors, and what does it cost?

Barbados has one large public hospital and a group of private clinics, most of them in the parish of St. Michael around Bridgetown.

  • Queen Elizabeth Hospital. The US Embassy in Bridgetown describes it as a 600 bed facility with medical, surgical and neonatal intensive care, and as the only major trauma facility on the island with a 24 hour accident and emergency room. The embassy tells visitors to expect long waits there for minor problems, because cases are seen in order of severity.
  • Private options. The embassy's list includes Sandy Crest Medical Centre in St. James, which it describes as offering private 24 hour medical services with laboratory, pharmacy and CT scanning; FMH Emergency Medical Clinic in Belleville; and Bayview Hospital, a private 30 bed facility that the embassy stresses has no emergency services.

On cost, the UK Foreign Office says treatment is expensive and that private clinics may not accept travel insurance as payment and may ask you to pay first. Canada's advice says some facilities expect immediate cash payment. For a rough sense of what a hospital stay can add up to, use the medical cost estimator.

What are the main health and security risks in Barbados?

  • Illnesses spread by mosquitoes. The CDC lists dengue and Zika. The Government of Canada also lists chikungunya and Oropouche virus disease. There is no malaria tablet equivalent for these, so repellent and covered skin are the defense.
  • Vaccines. The CDC recommends routine vaccines plus hepatitis A and B, and typhoid for some travelers.
  • Leptospirosis. The CDC advises avoiding fresh water that may be contaminated, especially after flooding.
  • The sea. Canada's advice says coastal waters can be dangerous, especially on the Atlantic side of the island, where riptides are common. The calmer west coast is where most swimming happens.
  • Roads. Traffic drives on the left. The CDC advises defensive driving and avoiding night driving, and Canada flags roundabouts as a collision risk for visitors.
  • Crime. Canada's advice reports an increase in violent crime, including armed robbery and gang related shootings, and says petty crime peaks in the November to April visitor season.

The US State Department kept Barbados at Level 1, exercise normal precautions, in the advisory issued on April 10, 2026, according to Barbados Today. Advisory levels change, so check the current one before you fly.

When is hurricane season in Barbados?

The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30, with the peak around September 10, according to NOAA's National Hurricane Center. Barbados is the easternmost island of the Caribbean, so it is often the first in the chain to meet systems arriving from the Atlantic. Many pass to the north, but the Government of Canada advises anyone visiting in those months to be ready to change plans at short notice.

What a storm does to a trip is mostly non medical: closed airports, cancelled flights, extra hotel nights. Travel medical insurance does not pay for those. It does pay for injuries and illness, and for evacuation when local hospitals are overwhelmed or damaged. The difference is set out in Caribbean hurricane season insurance.

If you are comparing islands by storm exposure, Aruba sits further south and west, on the fringe of the hurricane belt.

What should a travel medical plan include for Barbados?

  • Emergency medical evacuation. The UK Foreign Office says serious cases may need evacuation. Check the limit and that it covers transport to the nearest suitable hospital, which may be in the United States. See how evacuation cover works.
  • A policy maximum high enough for treatment after an evacuation as well as on the island.
  • A 24 hour assistance line that can issue a payment guarantee, given that private clinics may ask for payment first.
  • Water sports wording. Surfing on the east coast, diving and jet skiing are common on a Barbados trip. Read the hazardous activities list.
  • Cover for existing conditions. Most travel medical plans limit this to a sudden acute onset benefit. The term is defined in the glossary.

None of the international plans in Ombrela's catalog lists Barbados as a restricted destination. Compare them at travel medical insurance, and see Barbados travel insurance for more detail.

How do you use your insurance if you get sick in Barbados?

  • Dial 511 for an ambulance. The US Embassy notes the emergency ambulance service is operated by Queen Elizabeth Hospital.
  • For a true emergency go to the accident and emergency room at Queen Elizabeth Hospital. For urgent but less serious problems, a private 24 hour clinic is usually quicker.
  • Call your plan's assistance number before or during treatment. Ask whether it can pay the clinic directly.
  • If the clinic wants payment first, pay by card, then keep the itemized bill, the doctor's report and the receipt for your claim.
  • If doctors recommend evacuation, let the assistance company arrange it. Flights booked on your own are often not reimbursed.

Câu hỏi thường gặp

Is travel insurance required to enter Barbados?

No. Entry guidance from the UK Foreign Office and the Government of Canada lists a passport valid for your stay, an online immigration and customs form, and yellow fever vaccination proof only if you arrive from a country with yellow fever risk. Insurance is not on the list. Both governments still recommend it because treatment is expensive and serious cases may need evacuation.

What is the emergency number in Barbados?

The US Embassy in Bridgetown lists 511 for an ambulance, 211 for police and 311 for fire. The emergency ambulance service is run by Queen Elizabeth Hospital in St. Michael, which the embassy describes as the only major trauma facility on the island with a 24 hour accident and emergency room. Save your insurer's assistance number in your phone alongside these.

Will hospitals in Barbados bill my insurance directly?

Not always. The UK Foreign Office says private clinics in Barbados may not accept medical travel insurance as payment and may ask you to pay first. Canada's travel advice says some facilities expect immediate cash payment. Call your plan's assistance line as soon as you need care, ask for a payment guarantee, and keep every invoice and receipt in case you have to claim afterwards.

Does Medicare cover you in Barbados?

Generally no. Medicare.gov states that Medicare usually does not cover health care while you are traveling outside the US, apart from a few narrow exceptions. Some Medigap and Medicare Advantage plans include a limited foreign emergency benefit, but these rarely pay for evacuation. A separate travel medical plan with an evacuation benefit fills that gap for the length of your trip.

Barbados is not in the US Visa Waiver Program, so Barbadian citizens cannot use ESTA and need a B-2 visitor visa (usually issued as a combined B-1/B-2), applied for through the US Embassy in Bridgetown. A visa does not come with health cover. Barbados's public health system does not pay for treatment in the United States, and US hospitals bill visitors directly at prices far above those at home. Anyone traveling from Barbados to the United States, including parents visiting family, should buy visitor medical insurance that starts on the arrival date and runs for the whole stay.
