Honeymoon Travel Insurance: What It Covers and Skips

Honeymoon travel insurance covers prepaid trip costs and medical care abroad, but not the wedding itself. See what each policy pays and where the gaps are.

Honeymoon travel insurance is a standard comprehensive travel insurance policy bought for a honeymoon or a destination wedding trip. It reimburses prepaid, nonrefundable travel costs when a reason listed in the policy forces you to cancel or cut the trip short, and it pays for emergency medical care and evacuation abroad. It does not insure the wedding itself. Venue deposits, vendor no shows and a postponed ceremony belong to a separate wedding insurance policy.

Key facts at a glance

  • Travel insurance typically costs 4 to 10 percent of the trip price, according to the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC), depending on the cover you select.
  • The NAIC notes that cancellations caused by known, foreseeable or expected events, or by fear of travel, are generally not covered, and that cancel for any reason upgrades typically reimburse only a percentage of your costs.
  • Travel Guard sells a Wedding Bundle that adds trip cancellation when a wedding is cancelled, but its own description states that the cover does not apply if you are the bride or groom.
  • Medicare usually does not cover health care while you travel outside the US, according to Medicare.gov, and the CDC puts the cost of a medical evacuation at 25,000 to more than 250,000 US dollars.
  • US embassy and consulate staff cannot perform marriages abroad. The State Department explains that local law decides who can marry you and what paperwork is required.
  • The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30, according to the National Hurricane Center, which overlaps with peak honeymoon months in the Caribbean and Mexico.

What does honeymoon travel insurance cover?

There is no special honeymoon product. Insurers sell the same comprehensive policy to every leisure traveler, and a honeymoon simply tends to have more money at stake before departure. The parts that matter most are these:

  • Trip cancellation. Reimburses prepaid, nonrefundable flights, resort stays, cruises and tours when a covered reason stops you before departure. The NAIC lists illness, injury, a death in the family, weather, natural disaster and legal obligations as typical covered reasons.
  • Trip interruption. Pays for the unused part of the trip and the extra cost of getting home if a covered reason arises after you leave.
  • Travel delay and missed connection. Pays meals and lodging up to a daily cap after the waiting period in the policy.
  • Emergency medical and evacuation. Pays for treatment abroad and for transport to a hospital that can treat you.
  • Baggage loss and delay. Pays for lost, stolen or delayed bags, with low limits on valuables.

Insure the full nonrefundable cost of the trip, including upgrades that a relative paid for as a gift, because an insurer reimburses only the trip cost you declared. Our guide to trip cancellation insurance explains how covered reasons are read at claim time.

Does travel insurance cover a destination wedding that is cancelled?

Only the travel portion, and only for a covered reason. If the bride breaks a leg the week before departure, trip cancellation can reimburse the couple's flights and resort stay. It does not reimburse the caterer, the photographer, the florist or the venue rental, because those are event costs, not travel arrangements.

A decision to call off the wedding is not a covered reason on standard policies. Travel Guard offers an optional Wedding Bundle on its Deluxe and Preferred plans that adds trip cancellation when a wedding is cancelled, which is designed for guests. The insurer states plainly that the cover does not apply if you are the bride or groom, and that the bundle must be bought within 15 days of the initial trip payment.

For the event itself, look at wedding insurance, sometimes called event cancellation insurance. These policies typically come in two parts: cancellation or postponement cover for deposits and vendor costs, and liability cover that many venues require. Wedding insurers generally exclude a change of heart by the couple. Before you buy, confirm that the policy covers a ceremony outside the US and in your specific country, since not every wedding policy does.

One legal point is worth settling early. The State Department explains that US embassy and consulate staff cannot perform marriages, that local civil or religious officials do, and that some countries impose residency periods and document requirements. Many couples complete the legal marriage at home and hold a symbolic ceremony abroad, which removes one way the plan can fail. This is general information, not legal advice.

What happens if a vendor, resort or airline fails?

Travel insurance separates travel suppliers from wedding vendors. Some comprehensive policies list the financial default of an airline, cruise line or tour operator as a covered reason. That cover often applies only if you bought the policy within a set number of days of your first trip payment, and often not when you bought the insurance from the supplier that later failed.

A photographer who does not appear, a planner who goes out of business or a venue that double books are not travel supplier defaults. Those losses fall to wedding insurance, to your contract with the vendor, or to a dispute with your card issuer if you paid by credit card.

How do hurricanes and weather affect a honeymoon claim?

Weather is covered when it does something specific that your policy names, such as shutting down your airline for a stated number of hours or leaving your resort uninhabitable. A poor forecast is not enough. The NAIC advises buying early and warns against waiting until a storm has been named, because from that point the storm is a foreseeable event and losses from it are excluded.

If you are marrying in the Caribbean or on the Gulf coast of Mexico between June and November, buy the policy when you pay the first deposit and tell your guests to do the same. Our hurricane season guide covers the triggers in detail Optional upgrades such as cancel for any reason usually have to be bought within a short window after that first deposit.

Are rings, the dress and wedding gifts covered?

Only up to low limits. Baggage benefits cap what they pay per item and apply a separate, lower cap to valuables. Allianz, for example, explains that its baggage benefit has a sublimit for high value items, a specific limit on what it will reimburse for things like jewelry, watches, electronics and cameras. That figure is usually far below the value of an engagement ring.

The practical answer is to insure rings on a jewelry policy or as scheduled items on a homeowners or renters policy, and to confirm that the cover applies worldwide. The NAIC points out that homeowners insurance can cover possessions while you travel. Carry rings and the dress in the cabin, keep receipts and appraisals in your email, and report any theft to local authorities promptly. Allianz, for instance, asks for a report filed within 24 hours of discovering the loss.

What medical cover do the couple and guests need abroad?

Domestic health plans often pay little or nothing outside the US, and Medicare usually pays nothing abroad, which matters for parents and grandparents on the guest list. The CDC advises travelers to expect to pay up front for care in many countries and to check whether a policy covers higher risk activities such as scuba diving, which is a common honeymoon excursion and a common exclusion. Read the activities section of the policy before you book the dive boat.

Evacuation is the benefit people overlook. Small islands and remote resorts may not have a hospital that can handle a serious injury, and the CDC estimates an air evacuation at 25,000 to more than 250,000 US dollars depending on location. Our guide to emergency medical evacuation coverage explains how these benefits are approved.

How to get covered

You are likely to need two or three separate products: a comprehensive travel insurance policy with trip cancellation for the travel costs, a wedding insurance policy for the event, and a jewelry policy or rider for the rings. Ombrela does not sell trip cancellation or wedding insurance. Ombrela compares travel medical plans, which pay for illness, injury and evacuation abroad. If medical cover is the piece you are missing, the plan finder shows which plans fit your citizenship, destination and dates.

Two situations fit Ombrela directly. Guests who are not US citizens and are flying in for a wedding held in the United States can compare visitor medical insurance for their stay. Couples who need a Schengen visa for a European honeymoon can compare Schengen visa insurance that meets the EUR 30,000 minimum. Premiums depend on age, trip length, policy maximum and deductible, so use live quotes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is honeymoon travel insurance worth it?

It is worth pricing when your prepaid, nonrefundable costs are more than you could comfortably lose, or when you are traveling somewhere your health plan does not pay. The NAIC puts the typical cost at 4 to 10 percent of the trip price. A refundable hotel and flexible flights reduce the need for cancellation cover, but they do nothing for a hospital bill or an evacuation abroad.

Does travel insurance pay if we call off the wedding?

No. A decision not to marry is not a covered reason under standard trip cancellation, and wedding insurers generally exclude a change of heart as well. Travel Guard's optional Wedding Bundle covers trip cancellation when a wedding is cancelled, but the insurer states it does not apply to the bride or groom. Cancel for any reason upgrades reimburse only part of the trip cost.

Should wedding guests buy their own travel insurance?

Yes, each household should decide for itself, because your policy covers only the travelers named on it. Guests have their own flights and rooms at stake and their own medical needs. Older guests on Medicare usually have no cover outside the US. Share your dates, the destination and the hurricane season timing early so guests can buy before any storm is named.

When should we buy honeymoon travel insurance?

Buy when you make the first payment toward the trip. Cover for cancellation starts once the policy is in force, so earlier purchase protects more of the waiting period before departure. Optional upgrades, including cancel for any reason and some supplier default cover, are often available only for a short window after the first deposit, and no policy covers a storm that already has a name.

A honeymoon is protected by a small stack of policies, each doing one job. List what you have prepaid, match each cost to the policy that actually covers it, and start with the plan finder if medical cover abroad is the gap you still need to close.
