How to compare travel insurance quotes: hold the policy maximum and deductible constant, then check coinsurance, network, acute onset and exclusions in turn.
To compare travel insurance quotes properly, set every quote to the same policy maximum, the same deductible and the same dates, then compare what is left: plan type, coinsurance, provider network, acute onset terms, exclusions and the insurer behind the policy. Price is the last column, not the first. Two quotes that differ by a small amount per day often differ far more in what they pay after a hospital visit.
Key facts at a glance
- Premiums for visitor and travel medical plans depend on age, trip length, policy maximum and deductible, so a quote is only comparable when those four inputs match.
- Plan type matters more than price. The plan catalog Ombrela compares marks fixed benefit plans with a warning that coverage and benefits may not be adequate.
- Coinsurance varies widely among comprehensive plans in the catalog, from 100% in network on Atlas America and Patriot Plus to 70% in network on Atlas Essential America.
- IMG's 2026 Patriot America Plus certificate offers deductibles of $0, $100, $250, $500, $1,000 or $2,500 per insured person.
- Acute onset limits range from none on some lower priced plans to the full policy maximum on others, and each carrier sets its own age limit.
- AM Best announced in April 2026 that it upgraded the operating subsidiaries of SiriusPoint, the group that underwrites IMG's Patriot plans, to a financial strength rating of A (Excellent).
What should you hold constant when comparing travel insurance quotes?
Four inputs drive the premium, and all four must match before two prices mean anything.
- Traveler age on the start date. Use the real date of birth. Carriers change terms at set ages, and a birthday before departure can move the traveler into a new band.
- Coverage dates. Same start, same end. A quote for 90 days cannot be compared with one for 3 months if the day counts differ.
- Policy maximum. Pick one figure and apply it to every plan. If a plan does not offer that figure for the traveler's age, note it as a limit of that plan.
- Deductible. Pick one figure here too. A plan can look much lower in price only because the default deductible on the quote is higher.
Our guide on how to choose a deductible and policy maximum helps you settle those two numbers before you start.
How do you tell a fixed benefit quote from a comprehensive one?
This is the first filter, because the two plan types are not substitutes. A comprehensive plan pays a percentage of eligible charges after the deductible, up to the policy maximum. A fixed benefit plan pays a set dollar amount for each service, such as a fixed sum per day in hospital, whatever the hospital bills.
In the catalog, VisitorSecure, Visitors Care and Safe Travels Elite are listed as limited plans that pay a fixed, predefined rate for each service. They are usually the lowest priced results, and that is the reason. Compare them with each other, not with comprehensive plans. Our article on fixed benefit versus comprehensive plans shows the difference on a sample bill.
How do coinsurance and network change what a quote is worth?
Coinsurance is the share of eligible charges the plan pays after the deductible. With the maximum and deductible held equal, this is where comprehensive plans separate. According to the catalog:
- Atlas America pays 100% of eligible expenses in the United Healthcare network, and 100% outside it up to the policy maximum.
- Patriot Plus pays 100% in network. Outside the network it pays 90% up to $5,000, then 100%.
- Safe Travels USA pays 90% of the first $2,500, then 100%.
- Safe Travels USA Cost Saver pays 80% of the first $5,000, then 100%.
- Atlas Essential America pays 70% in network up to the policy maximum.
Work out the most you could owe under each: deductible plus your share of coinsurance. On a plan that pays 80% of the first $5,000, your share of that band is up to $1,000 on top of the deductible. On a plan that pays 70% all the way to the policy maximum, a large bill can leave a large balance, so check the certificate for any limit on your share.
Then check the network. A plan with a preferred provider network lets participating hospitals bill the insurer at negotiated rates. Search the network for an urgent care clinic and a hospital near where the traveler will stay. If there is none nearby, the network has little value for that trip. See direct billing and PPO networks for how this works in practice.
How do you compare acute onset terms across quotes?
For any traveler with a medical history, the acute onset benefit for pre-existing conditions deserves its own line. Record three things for each plan: whether the benefit exists, the age limit, and the dollar limit at the traveler's age.
The catalog shows how far these vary. Atlas America covers acute onset up to the policy maximum for travelers through age 79. Patriot Plus does so only under age 70. Safe Travels USA Comprehensive pays up to the policy maximum through age 69, $35,000 for ages 70 to 79 and $20,000 from age 80. Safe Travels USA and its Cost Saver version list $1,000. Patriot Lite and Atlas Essential America list no acute onset benefit.
A lower price can come entirely from this line. For a healthy 30 year old that may be a reasonable saving. For a parent on blood pressure medication it removes the benefit most likely to be needed.
Which exclusions and fine print should you compare?
Once the main numbers match, scan each plan for terms that change the outcome of an ordinary claim.
- Emergency room charge for illness. The WorldTrips Atlas wording applies a $200 copayment if you are not admitted. IMG's Patriot America Plus certificate applies a $250 deductible.
- Precertification penalty. IMG reduces eligible expenses by 50% when required precertification is missed.
- COVID-19. The catalog lists it as included on most plans and excluded on Patriot Lite and the Safe Travels Cost Saver plans.
- Limits for older travelers. Several plans cap the maximum at $10,000 from age 80.
- Renewal and cancellation. The catalog shows cancellation fees of $25 on WorldTrips plans and $50 on most IMG and Trawick plans, with refunds generally unavailable once a claim is filed.
- Who can buy. Plans exclude residents of certain home countries, and some cannot be purchased from certain US states. The catalog lists New York for IMG plans and Maryland, New York and Washington for WorldTrips plans.
Does the underwriter's rating matter when comparing quotes?
It is a useful tie breaker. The administrator, such as IMG, WorldTrips or Trawick International, handles service and claims. The underwriter is the insurance company that carries the financial obligation. A financial strength rating from an agency such as AM Best is an opinion on that company's ability to meet its insurance obligations.
Ratings change, so look them up on the day you buy instead of relying on a brochure. AM Best announced in April 2026 that it had upgraded SiriusPoint's operating subsidiaries to A (Excellent). The catalog names Zurich Insurance as underwriter for Trawick's Safe Travels plans. Confirm the exact underwriting entity on your own certificate, since it can differ by plan and by state.
How do you compare the final price?
Only now. With plan type, maximum, deductible, coinsurance, network and acute onset recorded, look at the total premium for the whole stay, not the daily rate. Add any renewal fee if you expect to extend. Then ask what the extra money buys. If a higher priced plan removes your coinsurance share and adds acute onset cover up to the maximum, the difference is easy to justify. If two plans are identical on every line, take the lower price.
To make this a ten minute exercise, download our free Quote Comparison Worksheet below. It gives you one row per plan and one column per term, so three quotes can be read across a single page. The plan finder can narrow the list first.
How to get covered
Open the visitor insurance quote page, enter the traveler's date of birth, home country and dates, and set the same maximum and deductible for every result. Compare plans on Ombrela line by line using the worksheet, then choose on terms before price.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the fairest way to compare two travel insurance quotes?
Give both quotes identical inputs: the same traveler age, coverage dates, policy maximum and deductible. Then compare plan type, coinsurance, network, acute onset terms and exclusions. Only when those are written down side by side does the price difference tell you anything, because a lower premium usually reflects a lower benefit somewhere in that list.
Why are some travel insurance quotes so much lower than others?
Usually because the plan is a fixed benefit plan that pays a set amount per service, or because it carries more coinsurance, a small acute onset limit, or no cover for COVID-19. A higher default deductible on the quote screen can have the same effect. Check each of those lines before assuming two plans offer similar protection.
Should I choose the plan with the highest policy maximum?
Not automatically. A high maximum on a plan that pays 70% of charges, or on a fixed benefit plan, may protect you less than a moderate maximum on a plan that pays 100% in network. Age limits also restrict the maximum available. Choose the plan type and coinsurance first, then the highest maximum that fits the budget.
Do all comparison sites show the same price for the same plan?
For the same plan, traveler, dates, maximum and deductible, the premium is set by the insurer and is generally the same wherever the plan is sold. Differences between sites usually come from different default settings on the quote form. Set the inputs yourself before comparing, and confirm the final figure on the application page.
A fair comparison takes a few minutes and a fixed set of inputs. Compare visitor insurance quotes on Ombrela with the same maximum and deductible on every plan, and let the terms decide before the price does.
