CIEE insurance for J-1 visa participants is a program benefit with a $100,000 maximum. See what it covers, what it excludes, and where the gaps are.
If you are a J-1 participant sponsored by CIEE, your health insurance is arranged by CIEE: its Work Exchanges plan is built for sudden illness and emergencies in the United States, not routine care. The plan is group policy CIEE-697401, with Aetna as the claims administrator and network, and CIEE's insurance page lists a $100,000 maximum benefit. What it does not do is cover a spouse or children, routine checkups, or days outside your insured period, so those are the gaps worth planning for.
Key facts at a glance
- Emergency cover, not routine care: CIEE's 2026 Work Exchanges summary of benefits says routine visits, sports physicals, immunizations and exams, including eye visits and glasses, are not covered.
- Who runs it: CIEE's 2026 summary of benefits names Aetna Student Health as the third party claims administrator and states that Aetna does not insure the plan.
- Treatment window: the summary lists a treatment period of 90 days per injury or illness, and CIEE's insurance page repeats that benefits are payable for that 90 day period.
- Notice rule: CIEE must be told of hospitalizations, testing, procedures, surgeries or specialist visits within 48 hours, or eligible expenses can be reduced by 50%.
- Federal floor: 22 CFR 62.14 requires at least $100,000 per accident or illness, $25,000 for repatriation of remains, $50,000 for medical evacuation and a deductible of no more than $500, for participants and accompanying dependents.
- After the program: US immigration rules give exchange visitors a 30 day grace period to depart after the program ends, and you should check whether your insured dates reach that far.
What does CIEE health insurance cover?
The CIEE plan is built for the unexpected. According to CIEE's 2026 summary of benefits for work exchanges, you pay fixed copays and the plan handles the rest within its limits: $20 per urgent care visit, $50 per doctor or specialist visit, $100 per emergency room or inpatient visit, and $20 per prescription for a 30 day supply. Aetna network providers are paid at 100% of the negotiated charge, while providers outside Aetna are paid at 80% of the reasonable charge.
The same summary sets out the larger benefits. Emergency medical evacuation is listed up to $75,000, return of mortal remains up to $30,000, emergency reunion up to $15,000, and up to $5,000 for travel home after the death of a parent, sibling or grandparent. Hospital room and board is paid up to the average semi private rate after a $100 copay and must be precertified within 48 hours. Outpatient procedures and surgeries carry a $15,000 maximum.
There are also baggage and valuables benefits, which is unusual for a J-1 plan, although CIEE excludes phones, tablets and similar personal electronics. If you want to understand how terms like coinsurance, precertification and reasonable charge work, our insurance glossary explains each one.
What does CIEE insurance coverage leave out?
Reading the exclusions is where most participants find surprises. CIEE's summary says routine visits, sports physicals, immunizations, eye exams and glasses are not covered. Dental cover applies only to sound natural teeth, with $1,000 for dental injury and $500 for dental illness, and cavities, fillings, crowns and bridges are excluded.
- Therapy caps: physical therapy and chiropractic care are limited to 10 outpatient visits per policy, one visit per day, and must be ordered in advance by a doctor.
- Mental health caps: inpatient mental health is limited to 10 days per policy and outpatient mental health to 10 visits per policy.
- The 90 day clock: expenses are reimbursable for 90 days per injury or illness, so a condition that needs months of follow up care may outlast the benefit.
- Prescriptions: you pay for the prescription in full at the pharmacy and then submit a claim for reimbursement.
None of this makes the plan poor value. It means the plan is emergency cover, and you should budget for routine care yourself. The medical cost estimator gives a sense of what uncovered visits can cost in the US.
Can you use your own insurance instead of CIEE insurance?
CIEE arranges insurance as part of the program rather than as an add on, and its published insurance materials do not describe a way to swap it for a personal policy. Under 22 CFR 62.14, sponsors must require that every exchange visitor has insurance in effect, so CIEE is responsible for your compliance. If you already hold a policy from home, ask CIEE in writing whether it changes anything before you rely on it.
If you keep a second policy alongside the CIEE plan, expect the two plans to coordinate rather than pay the same bill twice. A second plan makes sense only for a specific gap, such as time in the US before or after your insured dates, or a family member who is not covered at all.
When does CIEE coverage start and end?
CIEE's summary of benefits tells you to refer to your Confirmation of Insurance for your coverage details, so that document is the one to check. Compare its dates against three others: the program dates on your DS-2019, your flight into the US, and your planned departure. US immigration rules allow a 30 day grace period to depart after the program ends, and many participants use it to travel. If your insured period ends with your program, those travel days are uninsured unless you arrange cover.
Arriving early is the mirror image. If you land before your insured start date, a fall or a fever on day one is your own cost. Our guide to J-1 Summer Work Travel insurance covers the travel timeline in more detail.
How do you cover a spouse or children on a CIEE program?
CIEE's policy covers its participants. The regulation, however, covers more people: 22 CFR 62.14 requires that accompanying spouses and dependents of exchange visitors also have insurance meeting the same minimums. First ask CIEE whether your program category allows J-2 dependents at all. If it does, each J-2 needs a separate plan that meets the federal minimums.
On Ombrela's J-1 quote, IMG's Patriot Exchange is the plan built for families: the plan data Ombrela receives describes it as designed to satisfy J-1 and J-2 requirements, available from age 31 days to 64 years, with emergency medical evacuation up to $50,000. It cannot be bought by citizens of Botswana, Gambia, Ghana, Niger, Nigeria or Sierra Leone, by residents of Cuba, Iran, Kosovo, North Korea, Syria or Venezuela, or purchased from New York. Our J-2 dependent insurance guide walks through the options.
How do you file a CIEE insurance claim?
According to CIEE's summary of benefits, medical claims are mailed to Aetna Student Health, PO Box 981106, El Paso, TX 79998, and non medical claims such as baggage go to the CIEE Insurance Department, 69 A Street, Boston, MA 02127. The claim form is on ciee.org/insurance. Medical claims must be filed within 90 days, non medical claims within 15 days, and liability claims within 5 days of notification. CIEE's 24 hour emergency line and general insurance line is 1-888-268-6245, and the email is insurance@ciee.org.
Keep every receipt, your member ID from the insurance card, and a note of when you called CIEE about any hospital visit. The 48 hour notice rule is the single easiest way to lose half a claim.

How to get covered for the gaps
Your CIEE plan is your primary cover during the program. Where you find a gap, such as uninsured travel days or a J-2 spouse, you can compare J-1 insurance plans on Ombrela and choose dates that start where CIEE stops. Premiums depend on age, trip length, policy maximum and deductible, so check live prices rather than estimates. If you are unsure which plan type fits, the plan finder narrows it down. Before booking, confirm on travel.state.gov that your nationality is not subject to a J visa suspension or restriction under Proclamation 10998. This article is general information, not legal advice.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is CIEE insurance mandatory for J-1 participants?
CIEE arranges medical insurance for its Work Exchange participants, and federal rules at 22 CFR 62.14 require every sponsor to make sure exchange visitors carry insurance for the whole program. In practice you will be enrolled in the CIEE plan. Its published materials do not describe a waiver, so if you want to rely on another policy, ask CIEE directly and keep its answer in writing.
Does CIEE insurance cover doctor visits for a cold or a checkup?
A sudden illness such as an infection is the kind of problem the plan is designed for, and CIEE's summary lists a $50 copay for a doctor or specialist visit and $20 for urgent care. Routine visits, physicals, immunizations and eye exams are not covered. If you need ongoing treatment, remember the 90 day treatment period per injury or illness and plan for costs beyond it.
What is the CIEE insurance phone number?
CIEE's 24 hour emergency service line and general insurance line is 1-888-268-6245, and general questions can go to insurance@ciee.org, according to its 2026 summary of benefits. Call before any hospital admission or specialist visit when you can, because CIEE must be notified within 48 hours and failing to precertify can reduce eligible expenses by 50%. In an emergency, call 911 first.
Does CIEE insurance cover my spouse on a J-2 visa?
No. CIEE's policy covers its participants, while 22 CFR 62.14 separately requires accompanying spouses and dependents to hold insurance meeting the same minimums. First confirm with CIEE that your category allows J-2 dependents. If it does, buy each J-2 a plan with at least $100,000 per accident or illness, $50,000 evacuation, $25,000 repatriation and a deductible of $500 or less.
Read your Confirmation of Insurance tonight, mark your insured dates against your DS-2019 and flights, and if anything falls outside them, compare J-1 plans on Ombrela before you travel.
