Bahamas

The Bahamas does not require travel insurance to enter. What makes cover important is geography: good hospital care is concentrated in Nassau and Freeport, and a serious illness or injury on a smaller island usually means an air ambulance. A travel medical plan with emergency evacuation is the right type of cover. It is medical cover, not trip cancellation cover.

No. The Bahamas does not legally require visitors to hold travel insurance as of October 2026, and neither the UK Foreign Office nor the Government of Canada lists it as an entry condition. Both governments advise cover for medical treatment and emergency evacuation.

I dati principali in breve

  • 01Insurance is not an entry requirement. Neither the UK Foreign Office nor the Government of Canada lists travel insurance among the entry rules for The Bahamas as of October 2026.
  • 02The Government of Canada says health care is good in Nassau and Freeport but limited elsewhere, and that seriously injured patients may be flown to Miami or another facility.
  • 03The US State Department listed The Bahamas at Level 2, exercise increased caution, in 2026, citing crime, with most incidents on New Providence (Nassau) and Grand Bahama (Freeport).
  • 04Emergency numbers are 919 and 911, according to the UK Foreign Office and the Government of Canada.
  • 05The UK Foreign Office says hurricane season normally runs from June 1 to November 30 and that the water sports industry is poorly regulated.
  • 06Medicare.gov says Medicare usually does not cover health care outside the United States, and The Bahamas is outside it even though Nassau is a short flight from Florida.

Do you need travel insurance to visit The Bahamas?

No law requires it. The health insurance rules that applied during the pandemic are no longer in force, and as of October 2026 neither the UK Foreign Office nor the Government of Canada lists insurance among the entry conditions. You need a valid passport, and airlines will usually expect a return or onward ticket.

The official advice is still to arrive insured. The UK Foreign Office tells travelers to have cover for local treatment and possible evacuation, with accessible funds. Canada says clinics may ask for payment up front or for credit card details if you have no travel insurance. The US State Department advises travelers to carry insurance that includes medical evacuation.

US travelers sometimes assume a destination this close to Florida is covered by their home plan. Medicare.gov says Medicare usually does not cover care outside the United States, and most private US plans treat The Bahamas as out of network at best. How good is healthcare in The Bahamas for visitors, and what does it cost?

Care is uneven across the islands. Canada's travel advice describes health care as good in Nassau and Freeport and limited elsewhere. The Ministry of Health and Wellness lists Princess Margaret Hospital in Nassau and Rand Memorial Hospital in Freeport as public hospitals run by the Public Hospitals Authority. Nassau also has private hospital care, which is where most insured visitors are treated.

On the Out Islands, also called the Family Islands, care is delivered through small clinics. The UK Foreign Office says serious emergencies there require an air ambulance to Nassau, Freeport or Miami.

The UK Foreign Office describes treatment as good but expensive. Ombrela does not quote hospital prices for The Bahamas because no official price list is published. The pattern to plan for is a deposit or card guarantee on arrival at a private facility, followed by a bill at private rates. You can model a rough scenario with the medical cost estimator.

What are the main health and safety risks in The Bahamas?

The State Department's Level 2 advisory in 2026 cites crime, including armed robbery, burglary and sexual assault, with most incidents in Nassau and Freeport. Check the current level before you travel. For medical claims, the picture is dominated by the water.

  • Boats and jet skis. Canada says boating accidents occur frequently and that the rental industry is poorly regulated. The UK Foreign Office reports deaths linked to reckless use of watercraft.
  • Sharks. The UK Foreign Office warns that fatal shark attacks can happen without warning, that swimming at dusk or at night raises the risk, and that you should never enter water that has been baited.
  • Diving. Decompression illness needs chamber treatment that may be on another island.
  • Mosquito borne illness. CDC lists dengue and Zika. It does not list malaria for The Bahamas.
  • Roads. Traffic drives on the left, but the UK Foreign Office notes most rental cars are built for driving on the right, which takes adjustment.

When is hurricane season in The Bahamas?

June 1 to November 30, according to the UK Foreign Office, with most activity from August to October. The islands are low lying and spread over a wide area of ocean, so a single storm can close airports on several islands at once.

Hurricane Dorian in September 2019 is the reference point. The US National Hurricane Center recorded it as a Category 5 hurricane when it struck the Abaco Islands and then stalled over Grand Bahama.

In a storm, a travel medical plan covers treatment for injury or illness and evacuation that is medically necessary. It does not replace trip cancellation cover, which is what refunds prepaid flights and hotels. Ombrela's post on Bahamas insurance and hurricanes goes through the timing.

What should a travel medical plan include for The Bahamas?

  • Emergency medical evacuation with a high limit. This is the benefit most likely to matter on an Out Island, where the nearest full hospital is a flight away.
  • A medical maximum sized for private hospital care, including the possibility of onward treatment in Florida. Check how the plan handles care in the United States, since international plans generally exclude the USA as a destination.
  • Water sports wording. Look for how the certificate treats scuba diving, jet skis, parasailing and boat charters. Some need an adventure sports rider.
  • A 24 hour assistance team that arranges air ambulances and payment guarantees.
  • Acute onset of pre existing conditions if relevant to you.

The international plans in Ombrela's catalog, such as Atlas International, Patriot International Lite, Patriot Platinum International and Safe Travels International, are available for trips to The Bahamas. Compare them on Ombrela, and use the glossary for terms like deductible and policy maximum.

How do you use your insurance if you get sick in The Bahamas?

Call 919 or 911 in an emergency. On an Out Island, go to the local clinic and tell staff right away that you hold a plan with evacuation cover.

  • Phone the assistance number on your ID card before any transfer. The insurer chooses the receiving hospital and books the aircraft.
  • If a clinic or hospital asks for a deposit, pay by card and keep the receipt. Ask the assistance team whether a payment guarantee is possible.
  • Collect the medical report, itemized bill and proof of payment before you are discharged.
  • Submit the claim within the deadline in your certificate.

Domande frequenti

Is travel insurance required to enter The Bahamas?

No. As of October 2026, The Bahamas does not require visitors to show travel insurance, and the pandemic era health insurance rules no longer apply. The UK, Canadian and US governments all advise carrying cover for medical treatment and emergency evacuation, because clinics may ask for payment up front and serious cases on smaller islands are flown out.

What happens if I have a medical emergency on an Out Island?

You would be stabilized at a local clinic and then moved. The UK Foreign Office says serious emergencies on the Family Islands require air ambulance transfer to Nassau, Freeport or Miami. Call your plan's assistance line straight away so the insurer can arrange and pay for the flight. Flights you book yourself may not be reimbursed.

Does Medicare cover me in The Bahamas?

Generally no. Medicare.gov says Medicare usually does not cover health care while you are traveling outside the United States, with only limited exceptions. Some Medigap and Medicare Advantage plans include a foreign travel emergency benefit with its own limits. A separate travel medical plan fills the gap and adds emergency evacuation, which Medicare does not provide abroad.

Are jet skis and scuba diving covered by travel medical insurance?

It varies by plan. Recreational activities are often covered, but many certificates exclude or limit scuba diving beyond set depths, motorized water sports or anything done without a licensed operator. Some plans offer an optional adventure sports rider. Read the exclusions before you buy and choose registered operators, since Canada describes the rental industry as poorly regulated.

Visitare gli Stati Uniti partendo da Bahamas?

Bahamian citizens generally travel to the United States on a B-1/B-2 visitor visa. The US Embassy in Nassau also describes a narrow exception: Bahamians flying from Nassau through US preclearance may apply for admission without a visa if they carry a valid passport, hold a police certificate issued within the past six months (for travelers aged 14 and over) and meet the other conditions. That exception does not apply to arrivals by boat or to other border crossings. Whichever route you use, entry comes with no health cover, so buy visitor medical insurance for the full stay.
