Greece Schengen visa insurance must cover all 29 Schengen states for your whole stay with EUR 30,000 minimum. How to fit it to island hopping and ferries.
Greece Schengen visa insurance follows the same rule as every other Schengen state: travel medical insurance covering emergency medical care, hospitalisation and repatriation, with at least EUR 30,000 of cover, valid across all 29 Schengen countries for your entire stay. What makes Greece different is the trip itself. Island itineraries involve ferries, remote clinics, and sometimes a hop to a non Schengen country, and each of these affects the dates, limits and visa type you should choose.
This guide covers the requirement, how to plan cover for island hopping, the day trip trap many travelers miss, and what to do if your application is refused.
Key facts at a glance
- The European Commission lists medical insurance covering emergency medical care, hospitalisation and repatriation as a standard Schengen visa requirement; the minimum is EUR 30,000 across all 29 Schengen states.
- You apply to the country where you will spend the longest time, or to your first country of entry if stays are equal, according to the European Commission.
- The standard Schengen visa fee is EUR 90 for adults, with a reduced EUR 45 fee for children from age 6 to under 12, according to the European Commission.
- Decisions normally take 15 days and can be extended to 45 days if more examination is needed, the European Commission says.
- In Ombrela's plan data, Atlas International, Patriot Platinum International and Safe Travels International each list emergency medical evacuation up to $1,000,000.
What travel insurance does Greece require for a Schengen visa?
Greek consulates apply the common Schengen rules. Your policy must name you, cover every Schengen state rather than Greece alone, run for the full length of your stay, and pay at least EUR 30,000 for emergency medical treatment, hospital care and repatriation to your home country, including repatriation of remains. The certificate should show these points clearly on one page, which is why many insurers issue a visa letter; WorldTrips, for example, makes one available in its Member Portal.
Some Greek consulates accept applications through an external service provider, and document lists can vary by country of application. Check the list published for the consulate that serves your place of residence, and compare it with the common rules in our Schengen visa insurance requirements guide.
Should you apply to Greece if your trip includes Italy or other countries?
Count nights, not highlights. If you spend eight nights in Greece and five in Italy, Greece is your main destination and your application goes to a Greek consulate. If you spend a week in each, the European Commission rule sends you to the country you enter first. Travelers who arrive in Italy and take a ferry across the Adriatic to Greece often get this wrong. Either way, your insurance must cover both countries and every day in between, including the night on the ferry.
How do island itineraries change your insurance choice?
The legal minimum is the same for Athens and a small Cycladic island, but the practical risks are not. Smaller islands often have limited hospital facilities, so serious cases may need transfer to a larger hospital by air or sea. That transfer is an evacuation cost, and it is where limits matter.
- Evacuation limits: in Ombrela's plan data, Atlas International, Patriot Platinum International, Patriot International Lite and Safe Travels International list evacuation up to $1,000,000, while Atlas Essential International lists up to $500,000.
- Sea and adventure activities: scuba diving, jet skis and similar activities can fall outside standard cover. The catalog lists an optional adventure sports rider on the Patriot plans and optional athletic sport coverage on Safe Travels International.
- Scooter and quad rentals: many policies limit cover for motor vehicle accidents or require a valid license and a helmet. Read the exclusions before you rent.
- Pre-existing conditions: the Schengen plans in Ombrela's catalog do not cover pre-existing conditions, though several cover a sudden acute onset up to stated limits and age cutoffs.
If you want a sense of what emergency care can cost without insurance, the medical cost estimator shows why evacuation and hospital limits deserve attention.
Do day trips to Turkey or Albania affect your visa?
They can, and this is the island mistake that costs people most. Ferries run from several eastern Aegean islands to the Turkish coast, and from Corfu to Albania. Both countries are outside the Schengen area. A single entry Schengen visa is used up when you leave, so a day trip would leave you unable to return to Greece. If a crossing is part of your plan, say so in your application and ask for a multiple entry visa, and check the entry rules of the country you are visiting.
For insurance, confirm the policy covers you outside the Schengen area as well. The Schengen plans compared on Ombrela are international travel medical plans that cover travel outside your home country, excluding the USA and a list of restricted destinations, which you should check against your route.
How should your coverage dates match an island itinerary?
Your insurance dates must cover your full stay in the Schengen area, from arrival to departure. Island trips add two date risks. Ferry schedules can change with the weather, and a cancelled sailing can push your flight home back a day. Build a margin of a day or two into the policy end date, as long as your visa also allows the extra days. If you do need to stay longer within your visa, the plans in Ombrela's catalog are extendable through the carrier's portal, sometimes for a small fee.
Buy before you leave home. The catalog lists the Atlas plans as unavailable to people physically located in Greece at the time of purchase.
What other documents do you need?
The core file is harmonised across the Schengen area: a completed application form, a recent photo, a passport issued within the last 10 years with at least two blank pages and valid for three months after you leave, a return travel reservation, proof of accommodation for each night, proof of means of support, and the insurance certificate. For island hopping, a simple day by day plan listing each island, ferry and hotel helps the officer follow your route and shows that your insurance dates match it.
What happens if your Greek visa is refused?
The European Commission says refused applicants receive the reasons for the refusal and information on how to appeal. The visa fee is not returned. Your insurance premium usually can be, if the policy has not started: several plans compared on Ombrela give a full refund for cancellation before the start date. Our guide to refundable Schengen visa insurance compares the cancellation terms plan by plan.

How to get covered
Compare Schengen insurance plans on Ombrela using the dates of your full Schengen stay plus any margin you need. Check that the plan is open to residents and citizens of your country, compare evacuation limits and activity cover, and choose a zero deductible where the plan asks for it for visa purposes. Frequently Asked Questions
Is EUR 30,000 of cover enough for a trip to the Greek islands?
It meets the visa requirement, but it may not match the risk. An air transfer from a small island to a major hospital, followed by an inpatient stay, can use up a modest limit quickly. Many travelers choose a higher medical maximum and a plan with a large evacuation limit. The visa rule sets the floor, not the level of protection you actually want for your trip.
Does my Greece visa insurance need to cover other Schengen countries?
Yes. Schengen visa insurance must be valid in all Schengen states, even if you never leave Greece. A certificate limited to Greece can lead to a refusal. The international plans compared on Ombrela cover travel outside your home country, excluding the USA and certain restricted destinations, so a single policy can cover Greece, the rest of the Schengen area, and side trips.
Will my insurance cover me on a ferry between islands?
Travel medical plans generally cover illness and injury wherever you are within the covered area, including while traveling between islands, subject to the policy terms. What they may not cover is the cost of a missed connection or a cancelled sailing; that depends on trip delay or interruption benefits. Ombrela's plan data lists trip delay cover on some plans, such as Safe Travels International.
Can I buy Greece visa insurance after I arrive?
You need the certificate for your visa application, so you buy it before you travel. Some plans can technically be bought after arrival for other purposes, but the Atlas plans are listed in Ombrela's catalog as unavailable to people physically located in Greece. Buy from home, set the start date to your arrival day, and extend online if your plans change within your visa.
A Greek island trip rewards careful planning, and your insurance is part of it. Get a Schengen quote on Ombrela, match it to your ferry plan, and keep the checklist with your visa file.
