Do Chinese citizens need a visa for Europe?

For the Schengen area, yes, if you travel on an ordinary PRC passport. The Schengen visa list applies across all 29 countries, and the version reproduced by Switzerland's SEM shows ordinary PRC passports as visa required for stays of up to 90 days. Diplomatic passport holders follow separate rules.

Hong Kong SAR and Macao SAR passports are listed as visa free for short stays, and Taiwan passports are also listed as visa free, with conditions noted on the list. If you hold one of these, you do not need a Schengen visa for a trip of up to 90 days in any 180 day period, although travel medical insurance is still sensible. Remember that the UK, Ireland and Cyprus sit outside Schengen and have their own entry rules.

Where does a Chinese passport holder in the USA apply?

You apply in the United States, not in China. Under Article 6, the consulate covering your place of legal residence decides your case. First find your main destination: the country where you will spend the most nights, or the main purpose of the trip if the nights are equal, or the country of first entry if there is none.

Then find which office serves your state. Germany, for example, runs an embassy in Washington and consulates general in Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, New York and San Francisco, each with defined states. Switzerland, according to SEM, takes most applications abroad through an external service provider. Students on campus in one state and interning in another should apply where they legally reside and ask the consulate if unsure.

Which US status documents should you bring?

Your US status shows the consulate that you can and will return. Prepare the set that matches your situation:

• F-1 students: a valid F-1 visa, an I-20 with a DSO travel signature from the past year, an enrollment letter and recent transcripts. If you are on OPT, ask your DSO which additional documents you need to reenter.
• H-1B workers: a valid H-1B visa, your current I-797 approval notice, an employer letter confirming your position and approved leave, and recent pay stubs.
• Green card holders: your valid Permanent Resident Card, with an expiry date after your planned return.
• Dependents: your own visa or status document, plus proof of the relationship to the principal, such as a marriage certificate.

Expired visa stamps are a common problem. You can often remain in the US on a valid status with an expired stamp, but you need a valid visa to return after travel, and German Missions in the United States state that they only accept applicants holding a valid US green card or US visa. Sort out your US visa before planning Europe.

What must the insurance certificate show?

Article 15 sets the terms for every nationality: cover for urgent medical attention, emergency hospital treatment, medical repatriation and death, at least EUR 30,000, valid in all Schengen states for the whole stay. A certificate that works lists your name, date of birth, policy dates, maximum, territory, deductible and a 24 hour assistance number.

Two details matter for Chinese applicants. Your name on the certificate should match the pinyin spelling and order on your passport exactly, since a reversed surname and given name invites questions. And many university student health plans cannot issue a letter that confirms every Schengen term; a separate travel medical plan with a $0 deductible is the usual route. Which plans can you buy from the US?

What financial proof and itinerary do consulates expect?

Article 14 asks for the purpose of the trip, accommodation, enough money for the stay and your return, and evidence you will leave before the visa expires. Bring recent US bank statements. If your parents are funding the trip, a signed sponsorship letter with their bank statements and proof of your relationship is commonly requested; check whether your consulate needs translations.

Prepare a day by day itinerary, a round trip flight reservation and hotel bookings. Keep the itinerary consistent with the insurance dates and with your main destination.

How can you make the appointment go smoothly?

Book early, especially for summer and winter break, when students apply in large numbers. Article 9 lets you apply up to six months ahead and, as a rule, no later than 15 days before the trip. If your fingerprints were taken for a Schengen visa less than 59 months ago, Article 13 allows them to be copied into the new application. Bring originals and copies, sorted in the order of the consulate's checklist.
