Schengen visa for H-1B holders: apply in the US at your main destination consulate with a valid H-1B stamp, employer letter and EUR 30,000 insurance.
If your passport is from a country on the EU visa list, you still need a Schengen visa for Europe while you live in the US on an H-1B. Your H-1B does not waive the visa, but it lets you apply from the US: you file with the consulate of your main destination that serves the state where you live. Expect to show proof of US status that stays valid well past your return, an employer letter, recent bank statements, and travel medical insurance with at least EUR 30,000 of cover valid in all 29 Schengen countries.
Key facts at a glance
- Insurance rule: Article 15 of the EU Visa Code, Regulation (EC) No 810/2009, requires at least EUR 30,000 of travel medical cover for the whole stay, valid across the Schengen area and including repatriation for medical reasons.
- 29 countries: the Schengen area has 29 members, and Bulgaria and Romania became full members on 1 January 2025.
- Timing: the Consulate General of Spain in New York accepts applications between 6 months and 15 days before travel and normally decides within 15 calendar days, extendable to 45.
- Status validity: some consulates expect a green card or a long term US visa that stays valid for a set period beyond your return, and may not accept an I-797 approval notice in place of a valid visa stamp.
- Employer letter: Spain's New York consulate asks for a letter on company letterhead stating your type of work, seniority and annual salary, plus 3 months of complete bank statements.
Do H-1B holders need a Schengen visa to travel to Europe?
Your nationality decides, not your US visa. Citizens of Canada, Mexico, the UK, Japan, Brazil and other visa exempt countries can visit the Schengen area without a visa for short stays, whatever their US status. Citizens of countries on the EU visa list, such as India, China, the Philippines, Pakistan or Egypt, need a uniform Schengen visa even while they live and work in the US on an H-1B.
The visa covers stays of up to 90 days in any 180 day period for tourism, family visits or business meetings. If Europe is part of a longer work assignment, ask your employer's immigration counsel whether a national work visa is needed instead. Where do you apply for a Schengen visa in the USA as an H-1B holder?
You apply to the country that is your main destination, meaning where you will spend the most time. If no country is clearly your main destination, the EU Visa Code says you apply to the country whose external border you cross first. Then you pick the consulate of that country that covers the state on your driver's license, not the one closest to your office.
Jurisdiction is strict. Countries with several US consulates, such as Italy, assign each one a defined group of states, and a consulate generally accepts only residents of its own jurisdiction. Spain's New York consulate takes applications for its district through BLS International by appointment. Appointment systems differ between countries and consulates, so check the consulate page for the exact method before you plan dates.
Is your H-1B visa stamp or I-797 valid long enough?
This is where H-1B applicants most often get caught. Your I-797 approval notice proves your status, but your visa stamp is what gets you back into the US after Europe. Consulates want to see that you can return legally, and several set a margin beyond your trip.
Some consulates ask for a green card or a long term US visa that stays valid for a set period beyond your return, and some will not accept an I-797 in place of a valid visa stamp. Spain's New York consulate asks for a green card or a residence visa valid in the US. Policies differ between countries and between consulates of the same country, so read your own consulate's page. If your stamp expires soon, plan the visa renewal first and the European trip second.
What should your employer letter say?
Spain's New York consulate lists a letter from your employer on letterhead with an original or electronic signature, stating your type of work, seniority and annual salary. Most consulates expect something similar from employed applicants. A strong letter for an H-1B holder covers:
- Your full name as printed in your passport, job title and start date.
- Your annual salary and confirmation that you are employed full time in H-1B status.
- The approved leave dates, matching your flights and insurance dates.
- A statement that you are expected back at work on a specific date.
- The signer's name, title and contact details, usually from HR.
Pair it with 3 months of complete bank statements, recent pay stubs, flight reservations and hotel bookings. Consulates generally expect flight and hotel reservations for tourism applications.
What travel insurance do H-1B holders need for a Schengen visa?
Your employer health plan may pay some emergency costs abroad, but consulates want a certificate showing at least EUR 30,000 of cover, valid in every Schengen country, for every day of the trip, including repatriation. Most US group plans cannot issue that document, and many carry deductibles and coinsurance. That is why most H-1B applicants buy a separate travel medical plan. Our explainer on the EUR 30,000 requirement covers each element.
Among the Schengen plans you can compare on Ombrela, IMG's Patriot International Lite and Patriot Platinum International and WorldTrips' Atlas International plans are open to US residents traveling abroad. WorldTrips notes that for Schengen visa purposes you should select a $0 deductible on its Atlas plans. Be aware of state limits in the plan rules: the Patriot plans cannot be purchased in New York, and the Atlas plans cannot be purchased in Maryland, New York or Washington. If you live in New York, none of these plans is available to you through Ombrela, and you will need another insurer. Trawick's Safe Travels International is not sold to US residents.
What happens to your US reentry after a Europe trip?
To come back from Europe you need a valid H-1B visa stamp, a valid passport, and evidence that you still hold the job, such as your I-797, a recent employment verification letter and pay stubs. Under 22 CFR 41.112, automatic revalidation, which lets some people reenter on an expired visa, covers only trips of 30 days or less to Canada or Mexico (adjacent islands count only for F and J visa holders), so it does not help after Europe.
A few situations call for advice before you book. If a change of status or a new petition is pending, travel can affect it. If your nationality is covered by a current US presidential proclamation restricting visa issuance, a stamp renewal abroad may not be possible. This article is general information, not legal advice; confirm your plans with your employer's immigration attorney.

How to get covered
Enter your travel dates, age and state on the Schengen insurance quote page and compare plans with a $0 deductible and a maximum above the EUR 30,000 equivalent. Premiums depend on your age, trip length, policy maximum and deductible, so check live quotes rather than estimates. You can also use the visa insurance requirements tool to confirm the rules for your destination.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I apply for a Schengen visa with an expired H-1B stamp?
It depends on the consulate, and the answer is often no. Some consulates require a long term US visa that stays valid for a set period beyond your return and do not accept an I-797 in place of a valid visa. Even where a consulate accepts your I-797, you still need a valid stamp to reenter the US from Europe, so renewing the stamp first is usually the practical order.
Can my H-4 spouse apply with me?
Yes, family members usually apply together at the same consulate, each with their own form, photo, passport, fee and insurance certificate. Your spouse's proof of status is the H-4 visa and approval notice, and your employer letter plus bank statements support the family's finances. Each traveler needs their own policy or a family policy that lists every person by name with matching dates.
Does my employer health insurance count for a Schengen visa?
Rarely in practice. The consulate needs a document showing at least EUR 30,000 of cover valid throughout the Schengen area for your exact dates, including repatriation for medical reasons or death. Most US employer plans cannot issue a certificate that states all of that, and deductibles or coinsurance raise questions. A dedicated travel medical plan with a $0 deductible avoids the problem.
How early should H-1B holders apply for a Schengen visa?
Applications can be lodged up to 6 months before travel and, as a rule, no later than 15 days before. Spain's New York consulate says decisions normally take 15 calendar days but can stretch to 45 if more documents or an interview are requested. Appointment slots in busy seasons fill quickly, so book as soon as your leave is approved.
Confirm your stamp dates, book your appointment, and then compare Schengen visa insurance on Ombrela so your certificate is ready before you walk into the consulate.
