How to get health insurance for parents visiting the USA: who can buy it, paying with your US card, choosing start dates and getting ID cards to them.
You can buy visitor health insurance for your parents yourself, from the US, before they fly. Choose a plan built for non US residents visiting the USA, enter each parent's name exactly as it appears on the passport along with date of birth and travel dates, pay with your own card, and set coverage to start the day they leave home. The purchaser and the insured travelers do not have to be the same person, so an adult child in the US can buy and pay for the policy.
Key facts at a glance
- Benefits such as policy maximums and acute onset limits change with age, so parents of different ages may be offered different terms or need separate policies.
- WorldTrips lists Atlas America maximums of $50,000 or $100,000 for ages 65 to 79 and only $10,000 at age 80 and over.
- The VisitorSecure listing says visitors over 65 must start coverage within 30 days of arrival, and the plan cannot be bought more than three months ahead.
- No visitor plan on Ombrela covers ongoing care for pre-existing conditions; some cover a sudden acute onset up to an age based limit.
- Visiting parents do not qualify for Medicare, which is limited to US citizens and certain long term lawful residents.
Can I buy travel insurance for my parents from the US?
Yes. The person who pays does not have to be the person insured. You act as the purchaser, your parents are the insured travelers, and the policy is issued in their names. What matters for eligibility is their status: the plans are for non US citizens and non US residents visiting the USA, and each plan lists home countries it cannot accept.
Have this ready before you start: each parent's full name as on the passport, date of birth, home country and address, your US address where they will stay, travel dates, and the email address where you want the documents sent. Check one more detail that catches many buyers: some plans cannot be purchased from certain US states. According to the plan eligibility rules, the WorldTrips plans on Ombrela cannot be bought from Maryland, New York or Washington, and the IMG plans cannot be bought from New York. If you live in one of those states, filter your comparison accordingly.
When should coverage start, and when should you buy it?
Set the start date to the day your parents leave home, not the day they land. Travel days are when delays, dehydration and falls happen, and the Patriot plan listings say coverage begins once the policyholder has left their home country and is in transit. Set the end date to the return flight, plus a few days of buffer.
Buy once the visa is approved and flights are booked, so the dates are real. Watch the advance purchase limits: the VisitorSecure listing says it cannot be bought more than three months ahead. Buying late is possible too. Atlas America, Visitors Care, VisitorSecure and Patriot Lite list purchase after arrival as an option, but anything that begins before the effective date is not covered, and VisitorSecure requires coverage for visitors over 65 to begin within 30 days of arrival.
What health insurance works for parents on a visitor visa?
For parents, the deciding factor is usually age, because benefits shrink as age rises. Before comparing prices, check what each plan offers at your parents' ages, particularly the acute onset of pre-existing condition limit, which is what responds when a known condition suddenly flares up. Our guide to acute onset cover explains the definitions.
- Patriot Plus and Patriot Platinum cover acute onset only for policyholders under 70, with Patriot Platinum listing up to $1,000,000; Patriot Lite has no acute onset cover.
- Atlas America covers acute onset up to the policy maximum for policyholders up to age 79, according to its listing.
- Safe Travels USA Comprehensive covers acute onset to the maximum at 69 and below, up to $35,000 at 70 to 79 and up to $20,000 at 80 and above.
- Patriot Plus and Visitors Care list a $10,000 maximum for travelers over 80, and Atlas America lists $10,000 at 80 and over, so options narrow sharply with age.
- Safe Travels plans accept travelers up to 89, so parents aged 90 or older need a plan that lists ages up to 99.
Comprehensive plans pay a share of eligible bills up to the maximum, while fixed benefit plans pay set amounts per service. For parents staying several weeks or months, the difference matters more than on a short trip. If you are unsure where to start, the plan finder narrows the list by age and trip length.
Buying health insurance for parents visiting from India: what changes?
The buying steps are the same, but a few details come up often for families visiting from India. Insurance is not required for the B-2 visa, as our guide to B1 B2 visa health insurance explains, so buy once the visa is stamped and flights are confirmed. You can pay in dollars with your US card, or your parents can pay.
If your parents hold a health policy in India, ask the insurer in writing whether it covers treatment in the United States. Do not assume it does. Pack their regular medicines in original containers with an English prescription; CBP suggests a doctor's letter if the original container is not available and, as a rule of thumb, no more than a 90 day supply. For longer visits, remember that CBP generally admits visitors for up to six months and the I-94 record controls the stay. Our dedicated guide to visitor insurance for parents visiting from India goes further.
How do you get the ID card to your parents before they fly?
After purchase, the administrator emails the policy documents and gives access to a member portal. WorldTrips, for instance, says its member portal holds your policy documents, ID card and visa letter. Do not rely on your parents finding an email at the airport. Send the ID card and policy summary to their phones as files, and print two copies: one for each parent's bag.
On the printed copy, write the policy number, the assistance phone number, your US address and your mobile number in large type. If your parents are more comfortable in another language, add a short note in that language explaining that this card is their health insurance and should be shown at any clinic or hospital.
What should your parents do if they need a doctor in the US?
Agree on a plan before they arrive. For anything that is not an emergency, call the assistance number or check the plan's provider network, then go to an in network urgent care clinic rather than an emergency room. For chest pain, stroke symptoms, serious injury or breathing difficulty, go straight to the emergency room or call 911 and notify the insurer afterward.
Fixed benefit plans such as VisitorSecure and Visitors Care list precertification rules for certain treatment, with a 50% benefit reduction if it is skipped, so call before any planned admission or procedure. Keep every itemized bill and medical report; our guide on how to file a visitor insurance claim covers the paperwork.

How to get covered
Enter each parent's age and the travel dates on the visitor insurance quote page, then compare plans that fit their ages and your state. Ombrela is a comparison service, not an insurer: you compare plans on Ombrela and buy from the plan administrator. Premiums depend on age, trip length, policy maximum and deductible, so use a live quote for your parents' exact dates.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I pay for my parents' visitor insurance with my US credit card?
Yes, in general. The purchaser and the insured can be different people, and plan administrators typically accept a card in the purchaser's name. The policy is issued in your parents' names and covers them as visitors. Confirm the payment terms at checkout for the plan you choose. Check that the plan can be purchased from your state, since some plans exclude buyers in certain states.
Can one policy cover both parents?
It depends on the plan. Many plans let you add more than one traveler in a single application, but benefits such as acute onset limits and policy maximums change with age, so the terms for each parent can differ. Separate policies can also make sense when one parent is noticeably older or has different health needs. Check the rules at checkout.
Can I buy insurance after my parents have already arrived?
Some plans allow it, including Atlas America, Visitors Care, VisitorSecure and Patriot Lite, according to their listings. Coverage starts on the effective date, so anything that began earlier is not covered. VisitorSecure also requires visitors over 65 to start coverage within 30 days of arrival. Buying before departure avoids these gaps and covers the travel days.
Will the plan cover my father's diabetes or my mother's heart condition?
Not for routine care. Visitor plans exclude ongoing treatment of pre-existing conditions, including regular medicines and checkups. Many cover an acute onset, a sudden and unexpected flare up needing urgent care, up to a limit that depends on the plan and age. Bring enough medicine for the visit and compare acute onset limits before you choose.
The best time to sort this out is before the tickets are printed. Compare plans for your parents' ages and dates on the visitor insurance page, send them their ID cards, and let the visit be about family.
