Visitor Insurance for USA and Canada: Side Trip Guide

Visitor insurance for USA and Canada works when the plan covers worldwide outside your home country. Check territory, dates and Canada entry rules first.
Yes, several US visitor insurance plans also cover a side trip to Canada, because their area of coverage is worldwide except your home country. IMG's Patriot America plans and WorldTrips' Atlas America work this way, while Trawick describes Safe Travels USA as coverage for the 50 states. Buy one policy that runs continuously from the day you leave home to the day you return, and confirm the territory in the plan wording before you book Niagara Falls or Vancouver.
Key facts at a glance
- Canada's publicly funded health insurance is for eligible residents, so visitors generally pay for care themselves or through private insurance.
- IMG's Patriot America Plus certificate defines its area of coverage as worldwide excluding the insured person's country of residence.
- Indian citizens need a Canadian visitor visa; IRCC's country list offers India no eTA option.
- Visa exempt travelers need an eTA to fly into Canada, but not to enter by land or sea, according to IRCC.
- Under 8 CFR 217.3, Visa Waiver Program visitors who take a trip to Canada may be readmitted for the balance of their original admission period.
- A Canadian super visa requires private health insurance from a Canadian insurer or a minister approved company, valid for at least one year.
Does US visitor insurance cover a trip to Canada?
It depends on how the plan defines where it covers you, so check that before anything else. The plans fall into three groups.
- Worldwide outside your home country. IMG's Patriot America Plus and Patriot Platinum list their area of coverage as worldwide excluding your country of residence, with a separate international benefit column that pays 100 percent after the deductible. WorldTrips' Atlas America schedule lists separate terms for claims incurred outside the US, where the urgent care and emergency room copays do not apply.
- USA with onward travel. Trawick's Safe Travels Elite is described in Ombrela's plan catalog as covering travel to the USA, or the USA and then other countries.
- USA focused. Trawick describes Safe Travels USA as covering non US citizens while traveling to the USA (50 states), with coverage in countries on the way home. If your Canada leg sits in the middle of the trip, confirm with Trawick before relying on it there.
For a trip that includes Toronto, Montreal or the Rockies, a plan from the first group is the simplest fit. Our comparison of Atlas America and Patriot America looks at the two most common choices in more detail.
How should you set dates and territory on the policy?
Choose the USA as your destination on the quote, since these are US visitor plans, and set one coverage period that starts on the day you leave home and ends on the day you land back. Do not buy a US policy that stops when you cross into Canada and a second one that starts later; the gap is uninsured, and any illness that begins in it could be treated as pre-existing on the second policy.
Coverage usually ends when you return to your home country, so a stopover at home between the two countries can end the policy on some plans. Keep the whole trip in one continuous block if you can. Also buy before you leave home: Ombrela's plan catalog notes that WorldTrips plans are not available to people who are physically located in Canada at the time of purchase.
Travel insurance for USA and Canada from India: what changes?
Indian passport holders need two separate permissions: a US visa, usually a B-2, and a Canadian visitor visa. IRCC lists India among the countries that need a visa and gives it no eTA route, so apply for the Canadian visa well before travel. Carry your Canadian visa decision, your US visa and printed hotel or host details at each border.
For parents in their late sixties or seventies, age limits shape the choice more than the Canada leg. IMG's Patriot plans stop covering acute onset of pre-existing conditions at 70, while Atlas America continues that benefit until 80 within lower maximums for ages 65 to 79. Our guide for parents visiting from India covers those age bands in detail.
What does healthcare cost in Canada for visitors?
Canada's publicly funded system covers eligible residents of each province or territory, not tourists. Health Canada explains that people who do not qualify for government coverage pay for services such as prescription drugs and ambulance transport on their own or through private health insurance. So a visitor treated in a Canadian hospital or clinic should expect to pay for that care, or to have insurance that will.
That is why the territory question matters. Without a plan that covers Canada, a few days at Niagara Falls or in Banff are effectively uninsured, however generous the US benefits are.
What should you do if you get sick in Canada?
For a medical emergency, call 911, which works across Canada. For anything less urgent, call your insurer's assistance number before you go to a clinic; IMG's certificate prints a separate number for calls from outside the United States. If you are admitted, precertification rules still apply: IMG requires it within 48 hours of an emergency admission, or as soon as reasonably possible.
Keep itemized bills and receipts from Canadian providers in the original currency, and note the exchange rate on your card statement. The claim is filed the same way as a US claim.
Can you return to the US after visiting Canada?
Usually yes, but you go through US inspection again. If you entered on the Visa Waiver Program, US regulations (8 CFR 217.3) allow readmission for the balance of your original admission period after a trip to Canada, Mexico or an adjacent island, so the trip does not give you a fresh 90 days. B-2 visa holders are inspected on return as well, and should check their I-94 record on the CBP website afterward to confirm the admission date and end date.
What about a super visa or a long stay in Canada?
A US visitor plan is built for trips centered on the United States. If a parent is applying for Canada's parent and grandparent super visa, IRCC requires private health insurance from a Canadian insurance company, or from a company outside Canada approved by the minister, valid for at least one year from entry. Buy that policy separately to meet IRCC's rules; a US visitor plan is not designed for that purpose. Our Canada travel insurance guide covers Canada focused trips.

How to get covered
Start a quote on the visitor insurance quote page with your full trip dates, including the Canada leg. Shortlist plans whose area of coverage is worldwide outside your home country, then open each brochure to confirm. Premiums depend on age, trip length, policy maximum and deductible, so compare live quotes for your exact itinerary.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a separate policy for Canada if I already have US visitor insurance?
Not if your US visitor plan covers worldwide outside your home country and the policy dates run through the Canada leg. IMG's Patriot America plans define coverage that way, and WorldTrips' Atlas America pays claims outside the US. If your plan is limited to the 50 states, or you are applying for a Canadian super visa, you need a separate policy that meets Canada's requirements for that part of the trip.
Is the deductible different for claims in Canada?
The deductible you choose normally applies per period of coverage wherever you are treated, but copays and coinsurance can differ. On WorldTrips' Atlas America, the urgent care and emergency room copays apply only to US claims. On IMG's Patriot America Plus, the international benefit column pays 100 percent after the deductible, while US care out of network is paid at 90 percent. Check the benefit schedule for your plan.
Do Indian parents on a US B-2 visa need anything else for Canada?
Yes. A US visa does not allow entry to Canada. IRCC lists India among the countries whose citizens need a Canadian visitor visa, with no eTA option, so parents must apply separately and allow time for processing and biometrics. Carry both visas, return tickets, and your insurance ID card, and check that the insurance dates cover every day in both countries.
Can I buy visitor insurance while already in Canada?
Some plans allow purchase after departure, but eligibility depends on where you are physically located. Ombrela's plan catalog notes that WorldTrips plans cannot be bought by people physically located in Canada, among other countries. The simplest approach is to buy before you leave home, with coverage starting on your departure date, so that the whole journey through both countries is covered from the first day.
One policy, one continuous set of dates and a territory that includes Canada is all it takes. Compare visitor insurance plans on Ombrela and check the coverage area before you book the side trip.
