Schengen visa insurance for the Netherlands must name you, cover all Schengen states for your whole stay and pay at least EUR 30,000. See what VFS checks.
Schengen visa insurance for the Netherlands must name you, cover every Schengen country for your entire stay, and pay at least EUR 30,000 in medical expenses, including hospital treatment, emergency care, prescription medicine and repatriation to your country of residence, also in the event of death. NetherlandsWorldwide, the Dutch government's visa service, asks you to prove this with a document such as the first page of your policy, called the policy schedule.
The rule is shared by all Schengen states, but the Dutch checklist is unusually specific about what the document itself must show. This guide walks through those details, the VFS Global appointment, and what happens to your insurance if the application is refused.
Key facts at a glance
- NetherlandsWorldwide requires proof that you are covered, in all Schengen countries, for the entire stay, with at least EUR 30,000 for hospital care, emergency treatment, prescription medicine and repatriation.
- If your insurer cannot issue proof bearing your name and the other required details, the Dutch government tells you to take out insurance with another insurer.
- You can apply up to 6 months before your trip, and at least 15 days before the date you travel, according to NetherlandsWorldwide.
- The Dutch consular fee list for 2026 shows EUR 90 for a standard Schengen visa, EUR 45 for children aged 6 to 11, and no fee under 6, plus VFS Global service costs.
- On a multiple entry visa, you must be able to show proof of insurance for every later stay in the Schengen area, not only the first.
What travel insurance do you need for a Netherlands Schengen visa?
You need travel medical insurance, or an existing health policy, that meets four conditions. It must cover you personally. It must be valid in all countries of the Schengen area, not just the Netherlands. It must run for the entire duration of your stay. And it must cover at least EUR 30,000 in medical expenses for hospital admission and treatment, emergency treatment, prescription medicine and repatriation to your country of residence, including repatriation of remains.
NetherlandsWorldwide adds two useful points. If your existing health or travel policy already covers medical expenses abroad, check it against these requirements before you apply rather than assuming it qualifies. And if no insurer in your country of residence offers Schengen visa insurance, you may buy it in another country, or a sponsor in the Netherlands can take out insurance for you there. Seafarers and holders of diplomatic passports do not need to show insurance.
Which certificate fields does the Dutch consulate check?
The document you hand over at VFS Global is what gets assessed, so read it as an officer would. Check each of these before your appointment:
- Your full name exactly as in your passport. A group certificate must list every traveler individually.
- Territorial scope that says all Schengen states, or worldwide, rather than naming only the Netherlands.
- Start and end dates that cover your first night to your last, including any days spent in other Schengen countries.
- Medical maximum of at least EUR 30,000, or the equivalent in another currency, for medical expenses.
- The named benefits: hospital treatment, emergency care, prescription medicine and repatriation, including in the event of death.
- Deductible: the WorldTrips Atlas plans compared on Ombrela ask you to select a zero dollar deductible when buying for Schengen visa purposes.
WorldTrips says Atlas Travel policyholders can access a visa letter by signing in to its Member Portal. Other carriers issue their own letters or certificates, so ask before you buy. Visa letters are designed to show the required fields on a single page. The EUR 30,000 requirement explained covers currency conversion and per person limits in more detail.
How should your coverage dates match your itinerary?
Your coverage must match the stay you describe everywhere else in the file. The Dutch tourism checklist asks for a cover letter stating the duration of your stay, a travel reservation for your journey to and from the Schengen area, and accommodation reservations for the entire trip, with proof for each country if you visit several. An officer compares those dates with the certificate.
- Start the policy on the day you arrive in the Schengen area, even if you land in another country first.
- End it on the day you leave the Schengen area, not the day you leave the Netherlands.
- Add a margin of a day or two if a late flight could push your exit past midnight.
- For a multiple entry visa, keep proof of cover for each later trip ready to show when you travel.
Should you apply to the Netherlands or another Schengen country?
Apply to the country of your main destination. The European Commission explains that when you visit several Schengen states you apply to the one where you will spend the longest time, and if the stays are equal, to the country you enter first. NetherlandsWorldwide offers its own check for travelers visiting more than one country. If Amsterdam is a short stop on a longer trip through Germany or France, your application usually belongs with that other country; see our guides for the German and French visas.
What are the most useful VFS Global tips for a Dutch visa?
In many countries, Dutch Schengen applications go through VFS Global. In India, for example, NetherlandsWorldwide lists VFS centers in 12 cities, including Mumbai, New Delhi, Bangalore and Chennai. The steps it describes are similar elsewhere:
- Complete your own application form online so it carries a unique code; the Dutch government warns that forms without it can cause processing issues.
- Book the appointment yourself, directly with VFS Global, and make a separate appointment for each person. NetherlandsWorldwide advises against intermediaries.
- Attend in person, including children, and bring every document on your checklist plus the checklist itself.
- Expect to give fingerprints unless you gave them for a Schengen visa in the past 59 months, or another listed exception applies.
- The email you get when processing ends does not say whether you were approved, so check the visa details carefully once you have your passport.
What other documents do you need?
For tourism, the Dutch checklist for applicants in India lists a signed application form, a passport no more than 10 years old with 2 blank pages and at least 3 months of validity after you leave the Schengen area, proof of legal residence, proof of social or economic ties such as employment or business records, a cover letter, accommodation reservations, proof of financial means such as recent bank statements, a travel reservation, and travel medical insurance. Checklists vary by country of application, so download the one for yours.
What happens to your insurance if the visa is refused?
A refusal decision explains why the visa was denied. According to NetherlandsWorldwide, you have four weeks from the date on the decision to lodge an objection with the Immigration and Naturalisation Service (IND), or you can submit a new application instead and pay the fee again. The visa fee and VFS Global or TLScontact charges are not refunded. The Dutch government also notes that some insurance providers offer a refund if an application is denied. On the plans compared on Ombrela, the refund depends on cancelling before your start date; our guide to refundable Schengen visa insurance explains the terms.

How to get covered
Compare Schengen insurance plans on Ombrela and filter for the dates of your whole Schengen stay. Before paying, check that the plan is open to residents and citizens of your country, since each plan has its own exclusions, and that it issues a visa letter. Premiums depend on age, trip length, policy maximum and deductible, so compare live quotes rather than estimates.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the Netherlands accept travel insurance bought in another country?
Yes, in some situations. NetherlandsWorldwide says that if no insurer offers Schengen visa insurance in your country of residence, you can take out insurance in another country, and a sponsor in the Netherlands can buy it for you there. Whatever you choose, the proof must bear your name, cover all Schengen countries for the full stay, and include at least EUR 30,000 in medical expenses.
Is a policy schedule enough, or do I need the full policy wording?
NetherlandsWorldwide gives the first page of the policy, the policy schedule, as an example of acceptable proof, provided it shows the required information: that you are covered, the Schengen wide scope, the dates, and the EUR 30,000 medical cover including repatriation. If your schedule leaves any of this out, ask the insurer for a visa letter. Carry the full wording when you travel, in case it is requested.
Do children need their own insurance for a Dutch Schengen visa?
Each applicant needs proof of insurance in their own name. A family policy can work if the certificate lists every child individually with the dates and limits that apply to each. Children also attend the VFS appointment, and the Dutch consular fee list for 2026 shows EUR 45 for ages 6 to 11 and no fee for children under 6.
Can I extend my Schengen insurance while in the Netherlands?
You can extend many plans online, but you cannot extend your visa this way. The Schengen plans in Ombrela's catalog are extendable through the carrier's portal, sometimes for a small fee. Note that the catalog lists the Atlas plans as unavailable to buy for people physically located in the Netherlands, so purchase your policy before you leave home and extend it rather than start a new one.
A Dutch visa file is judged on details, and the insurance certificate is one of the easiest parts to get right. Get a Schengen quote on Ombrela and run it through the checklist before your VFS appointment.
