Jamaica

Jamaica does not require travel insurance to enter, but the US State Department strongly recommends it and warns that private hospitals ask for payment before they admit you. A travel medical plan with emergency evacuation is the type of cover that matters most here. It pays for treatment and medical transport, not for canceled flights or hotels.

  • 01Insurance is not an entry requirement. Jamaica asks visitors to complete the Immigration and Customs C5 form, which the UK Foreign Office says can be done online before arrival.
  • 02The US State Department lowered Jamaica from Level 3 to Level 2, exercise increased caution, on January 17, 2026. Some areas within parishes carry a higher level, so read the current advisory.
  • 03The State Department's Jamaica advisory says private hospitals require payment up front before admitting patients and puts air ambulance service to the United States at roughly $30,000 to $50,000.
  • 04Emergency numbers: 119 for police and 110 for ambulance and fire. The UK Foreign Office tells travelers to call 110 and ask for an ambulance.
  • 05Hurricane Melissa made landfall in western Jamaica on October 28, 2025 as a Category 5 storm, according to the US National Hurricane Center.
  • 06CDC Travelers' Health lists dengue, Zika and leptospirosis among the infection risks for travelers to Jamaica.

Do you need travel insurance to visit Jamaica?

Not legally. As of October 2026, entry to Jamaica depends on your passport, the C5 immigration and customs form, and a visa for some nationalities. Neither the UK Foreign Office nor the Government of Canada lists insurance among the entry requirements.

The advice from those same governments is consistent though. The US State Department strongly recommends travel insurance that includes medical cover and evacuation assistance, and notes that US Medicare and Medicaid do not apply abroad and that most hospitals overseas do not accept US health insurance. Medicare.gov says the same: Medicare usually does not cover care outside the United States.

So the question is less whether you are required to have a plan and more whether you could pay a private hospital deposit from your own card on the day. You can compare travel medical plans on Ombrela for your trip dates.

How good is healthcare in Jamaica for visitors, and what does it cost?

It depends where you are. The Government of Canada says adequate medical services are available in tourist areas and in Kingston, and that care is limited elsewhere. The UK Foreign Office says the standard of both private and government facilities varies.

Payment works differently from home. The State Department says private hospitals require payment up front before admitting patients. The UK Foreign Office adds that doctors and hospitals expect immediate cash payment. Canada warns you may have to pay before treatment even if you are insured.

The largest single bill is usually transport. The State Department puts air ambulance service from Jamaica to the United States in the range of $30,000 to $50,000. It also advises bringing enough prescription medicine for the whole trip, because common medications such as insulin can be hard to obtain.

Resort clinics handle minor problems and are billed privately. For a sense of what hospital care can add up to, try the medical cost estimator.

What are the main health and safety risks in Jamaica?

The State Department cites crime and health as its reasons for the Level 2 advisory issued in January 2026. It names specific neighborhoods in several parishes where it advises against travel. Most visitors stay in resort areas, where the practical risks look like this:

  • Road accidents. Canada's advice describes inland roads as narrow, winding, poorly lit and poorly signed. Traffic drives on the left.
  • Mosquito borne illness. CDC lists dengue and Zika. There is no malaria listing on CDC's Jamaica page.
  • Leptospirosis. CDC lists it as a risk from fresh water contaminated by animals, which is relevant after flooding and for river activities.
  • Water and adventure activities. Cliff jumping, river rafting, zip lines and rented jet skis produce a steady share of fractures and cuts.
  • Stomach illness and heat. Follow CDC's food and water guidance and drink more water than you think you need.

If you plan organized adventure activities, check whether your plan treats them as covered sports. Ombrela's post on insurance for adventure sports explains how riders work.

When is hurricane season in Jamaica?

The Atlantic season runs from June 1 to November 30. The most active period is usually August to October. Canada's advice warns that tropical storms can strengthen into major hurricanes quickly and can disrupt essential services.

Jamaica has recent experience. The US National Hurricane Center's report on Hurricane Melissa records a Category 5 landfall in western Jamaica on October 28, 2025, with catastrophic wind and storm surge in the west of the island. The State Department's 2026 updates no longer flag natural disaster as a reason for its Jamaica advisory, but if you are heading to the western parishes it is reasonable to ask your hotel what is fully open.

Be clear about what insurance does in a storm. A travel medical plan pays for injuries, illness and medically necessary evacuation. It does not refund a trip you cancel because a hurricane is forecast. That needs trip cancellation cover bought before the storm is named.

What should a travel medical plan include for Jamaica?

  • Emergency medical evacuation with a limit well above the State Department's $30,000 to $50,000 air ambulance range.
  • A medical maximum that would cover intensive care and surgery at a private hospital.
  • A 24 hour assistance line that can speak to the hospital about a payment guarantee, since deposits are requested before admission.
  • Adventure sports wording that matches your plans, or an optional rider.
  • Acute onset of pre existing conditions if you have a chronic condition, with attention to age limits.
  • Emergency dental and prescription benefits for the smaller problems that are more likely than a hospital stay.

The international plans in Ombrela's catalog, including Atlas International, Patriot International Lite, Patriot Platinum International and Safe Travels International, are all available for trips to Jamaica. Compare limits and deductibles before you choose, and look up unfamiliar terms in the glossary. There is more detail in the post on emergency medical evacuation cover.

How do you use your insurance if you get sick in Jamaica?

In an emergency call 110 for an ambulance or 119 for the police. The State Department says ambulance services are not always staffed with trained emergency crews and are not always readily available, especially in rural areas, so ask your hotel how it handles urgent transport.

  • Call your plan's assistance number early, ideally before admission. Have your policy number ready.
  • Be prepared to put down a deposit on a credit card even when you are insured. Keep the receipt.
  • Ask for an itemized bill and a written diagnosis before you leave the facility.
  • Let the assistance team arrange any evacuation. Flights booked on your own are commonly not reimbursed.
  • File the claim with receipts as soon as you are home, within the deadline in your certificate.

সাধারণ জিজ্ঞাসা

Is travel insurance required to enter Jamaica?

No. As of October 2026, Jamaica does not require proof of travel insurance at the border. You need a valid passport and a completed C5 immigration and customs form, which can be filled in online. The US State Department strongly recommends travel insurance with medical and evacuation cover because private hospitals ask for payment before admission.

How much does a medical evacuation from Jamaica cost?

The US State Department's Jamaica advisory puts air ambulance service to the United States at roughly $30,000 to $50,000. The actual figure depends on the aircraft, the medical team and the destination hospital. Travel medical plans usually list emergency medical evacuation as a separate benefit with its own limit, and the insurer's assistance team must arrange the flight.

Will a Jamaican hospital accept my US insurance card?

Usually not. The State Department says most hospitals and doctors abroad do not accept US health insurance and that Medicare and Medicaid do not apply overseas. Private hospitals in Jamaica ask for payment up front. With a travel medical plan, the assistance line may arrange a guarantee of payment for an admission, and you claim smaller costs back afterward.

Does travel medical insurance cover hurricanes in Jamaica?

It covers medical treatment if you are injured or fall ill during a storm, and evacuation when it is medically necessary. It does not refund flights, hotels or tours you lose because of a hurricane. That is trip cancellation or interruption cover, which is a different product and normally has to be bought before a storm is named.

Jamaica is not in the US Visa Waiver Program, so Jamaican citizens need a B-2 visitor visa (usually issued as a combined B-1/B-2) from the US Embassy in Kingston before traveling to the United States for tourism or family visits. ESTA is not available. A visa does not come with any health cover, and US hospital care is billed at private rates, so arrange visitor medical insurance that begins on your arrival date and runs for the full length of your stay.
