Aruba
Aruba does not require you to hold travel insurance to enter. It is still worth carrying travel medical cover with evacuation, because Aruba's own tourism authority warns that not all insurance is accepted locally and that you may have to pay for a doctor or hospital visit by cash or card. Medicare and most US health plans pay little or nothing there.

এক নজরে মূল তথ্য
- 01Insurance is not an entry requirement. Aruba's mandatory Aruba Visitors Insurance, introduced during the pandemic, ended for arrivals from July 8, 2022, as reported by Aruba Today and VisitAruba.
- 02Every traveler must complete the online Embarkation and Disembarkation (ED) card before arrival; the UK Foreign Office says it can be completed up to 7 days before you arrive. Aruba Airport states that visitors aged 8 and over arriving by air pay a US$20 sustainability fee through the same platform.
- 03Emergency numbers published by the Aruba Tourism Authority are 911 for ambulance and fire and 100 for police.
- 04The Aruba Tourism Authority lists three medical centres: Dr. Horacio Oduber Hospital in Oranjestad, the private Urgent Care Clinic in Noord and Centro Medico Rudy Engelbrecht in San Nicolas.
- 05Aruba's meteorological service (Departamento Meteorologico Aruba) places the island on the southern fringes of the hurricane belt and says considerable damage from tropical cyclones occurs about once every 100 years.
- 06The US State Department advisory for Aruba was Level 1, exercise normal precautions, as published by the US Consulate General in Curacao in August 2026.
Do you need travel insurance for Aruba?
Not by law. Aruba required visitors to buy its own Aruba Visitors Insurance during the pandemic, and that mandate ended for arrivals from July 8, 2022. Current entry guidance from the UK Foreign Office and the Government of Canada lists these requirements and no insurance rule:
- A passport valid for the length of your stay.
- A completed online ED card. The UK Foreign Office says you can complete it up to 7 days before arrival.
- For visitors aged 8 and over arriving by air, a US$20 sustainability fee paid through the ED card platform, according to Aruba Airport.
The reason to buy cover is financial. The US Consulate General in Curacao recommends travel insurance for Aruba and suggests checking evacuation assistance and medical cover. Medicare.gov states that Medicare usually does not cover health care outside the US. You can compare plans on Ombrela at travel medical insurance quotes.
How good is healthcare in Aruba for visitors, and what does it cost?
Aruba is a small island with a compact health system. The Aruba Tourism Authority describes three medical centres: Dr. Horacio Oduber Hospital in Oranjestad, which functions as the general hospital and has an emergency department; the private Urgent Care Clinic in Noord, near the main hotel strip; and Centro Medico Rudy Engelbrecht in San Nicolas at the southern end. Canada's travel advice speaks positively of the quality of care on the island.
Two limits are worth knowing:
- Payment. The tourism authority says not all insurance is accepted, so you may have to pay for a doctor or hospital visit by cash or credit card. Canada's advice says facilities may require immediate cash payment.
- Specialist care. If a condition cannot be treated on the island, the tourism authority says the hospital arranges transfer by air ambulance to partner hospitals, including in the United States, Colombia and the Netherlands.
That second point is why an evacuation benefit matters on an island with one general hospital. To think through possible bills, try the medical cost estimator.
What are the main health and security risks in Aruba?
Official sources describe a short list of specific risks.
- Illnesses spread by mosquitoes. The CDC lists dengue and Zika for Aruba, and Canada adds chikungunya. Use repellent, particularly after rain.
- Vaccines. The CDC recommends routine vaccines plus hepatitis A and hepatitis B for travelers who have not had them.
- Water and wind sports. Canada's advice notes that rescue services may not match what you are used to at home. The windward north and east coasts have strong surf and currents, and the island's steady trade winds draw kitesurfers and windsurfers. Check whether your plan treats these as covered activities; see travel insurance for adventure sports.
- Petty crime. The US advisory published by the US Consulate General in Curacao in August 2026 was Level 1 and says theft of unsecured property and vehicle break ins are the most likely problems. Check the current level before you travel.
- Firearms rules. The same advisory warns that bringing guns, ammunition or even spent casings into Aruba without written authorization can lead to arrest.
- Sun and heat. Aruba is dry and windy, which hides how strong the sun is. Dehydration and sunburn are common reasons visitors seek care.
Is Aruba affected by hurricane season?
Less than most of the Caribbean, but not never. Aruba's meteorological service, Departamento Meteorologico Aruba, says the island is on the southern fringes of the hurricane belt and that considerable damage from tropical cyclones passing just south of Aruba happens about once every 100 years. It adds that storms passing to the north can still cause beach erosion and coastal flooding.
The Atlantic season runs June 1 to November 30 according to NOAA. For travelers the usual effects are indirect: rough seas, heavy rain and flight disruption through hubs in Florida or elsewhere in the region.
A travel medical plan pays for treatment and evacuation, not for cancelled flights or lost hotel nights. For how the two products differ across the region, see Caribbean hurricane season insurance. Neighboring Curacao has a similar storm profile.
What should a travel medical plan include for Aruba?
- Emergency medical evacuation. With one general hospital, complex cases are flown off the island. Make sure the benefit covers transport to the nearest suitable hospital and onward to your home country.
- A policy maximum sized for hospital treatment abroad after a transfer, not only a clinic visit in Noord.
- Direct payment or fast reimbursement. Since local providers may not accept your insurer, look for a 24 hour assistance line that can arrange a payment guarantee.
- Sports wording. If you plan to dive, kitesurf or ride an off road vehicle in the national park, read the hazardous activities section or add a sports rider where one is offered.
- A deductible you can afford on the day. Definitions are in the glossary.
None of the international plans in Ombrela's catalog lists Aruba as a restricted destination. Compare them at travel medical insurance. More background is in Aruba and Curacao travel insurance.
How do you use your insurance if you get sick in Aruba?
- In an emergency call 911 for an ambulance. The hospital in Oranjestad has an emergency department that sees all travelers.
- For minor problems, ask your hotel front desk. The tourism authority notes that most hotels have doctors and dentists on call.
- Call your plan's assistance line early. The UK Foreign Office advises contacting your insurer quickly if you are referred to a medical facility.
- Be ready to pay by card or cash and claim afterwards. Keep itemized invoices, the medical report and proof of payment.
- Bring enough prescription medicine for the trip. The tourism authority says local pharmacies cannot fill a prescription written by a doctor who does not practise on the island.
সাধারণ জিজ্ঞাসা
Is travel insurance required to enter Aruba?
No. The mandatory Aruba Visitors Insurance from the pandemic period ended for arrivals from July 8, 2022. Current UK and Canadian government entry guidance lists a valid passport and a completed online ED card, and Aruba Airport describes a US$20 sustainability fee for air arrivals aged 8 and over. None of these sources lists insurance as a condition of entry. Cover is recommended, not required.
Does Medicare or US health insurance cover you in Aruba?
Usually not. Medicare.gov states that Medicare usually does not cover health care while you travel outside the US, with narrow exceptions. Many private US plans pay only limited emergency benefits abroad and do not pay for evacuation. The Aruba Tourism Authority also warns that not all insurance is accepted locally, so you may pay by cash or card first and claim afterwards.
Does Aruba get hurricanes?
Rarely. Aruba's meteorological service says the island sits on the southern fringes of the hurricane belt and that considerable damage from tropical cyclones occurs about once every 100 years. Storms passing to the north can still bring coastal flooding, beach erosion and rough seas during the June 1 to November 30 Atlantic season, and they can disrupt connecting flights elsewhere in the region.
What happens if you need treatment that Aruba cannot provide?
The Aruba Tourism Authority says that when a patient cannot be treated on the island, the hospital arranges overseas care with partner hospitals, including in the United States, Colombia and the Netherlands, and the patient is moved by air ambulance. Air ambulance flights are expensive, which is why a travel medical plan for Aruba should include an emergency medical evacuation benefit with a high limit.
যুক্তরাষ্ট্র ভ্রমণ, যাত্রার দেশ: Aruba
Aruba is a constituent country of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, and Arubans hold Dutch nationality. The Netherlands is in the US Visa Waiver Program, so travelers with an eligible Dutch passport generally apply for ESTA for visits of up to 90 days, while other residents of Aruba apply for a B-2 visitor visa. Flights from Aruba to the United States clear US border checks at the US preclearance facility in Aruba's airport. Neither route includes any health cover. Aruba's public health insurance is not designed to pay US hospital prices, so anyone traveling from Aruba to the United States should arrange visitor medical insurance for the full stay before departure.
